I wanted to start a new thread dedicated to "Gold Rings"
and invite anyone to post their beautiful work here.
This idea comes from a discussion that started in the
Paint.net thread and I thought the topic deserved
it's own space. This image is all GIMP, not paint.net.
I'll start with this work I've entitled...
"Escape."

For this image I've used stocks from Elena Dudina at devART.
She has a great gallery and her stocks are here....

I gave this a try and here's what I came up with.

Thanks.

Great job, good looking rings.
Thanks for contributing.
@oldmangrumpy
Yes, the rings are a buzzing.
Great looking art there.

Everyone has contributed some great looking stuff.
I hope this thread catches on... so far so good.

I seem to remember using caves from Margaret River in my 'Gollum ring' series, but here they are used as part of indigenous people's celebrations. The symbol on the ring represent human tracks (footprints).

@omg:
You sure make some beautiful rings. Is that BRL?

Peter - no BRL in that ring; I just used one of a number of gradients I created, the design of which emphasises curves just with 'shape = linear' in tool options settings. I needed something like that to produce a realistic spiral effect as shown at post 855 on this page at GL https://gimplearn.net/viewtopic.php/OMG ... &start=850

If you would like more info/examples/method just let me know.

I would really like to know your method of making rings.
I like BRL, it has it's place but I'm after a different type of ring. I like the "roundness" of the rings you get. I would also like to know how you make gradients etc.
I've spent many years making rings with fractal art using Apophysis. Don't know if you've seen them at my deviant ART page or not.
I like the surfaces you get on your spirals too.

I really like that rotating ring. I like the smooth
texture of the surfaces and the roundness of the edges.
Looks really great. :kpix

Hi Peter,

As requested this was my approach to creating the golden ring without using BRL.

1. I created 6 separate paths (shown below), the manipulation of which (add/subtract/intersect) provides:
1.1. the front outside of the ring
1.2. the rear inside of the ring
1.3. the top side of the ring
2. I use the OMG created gradient to colour those three elements separately– simple 'shape = linear' in tool options and stroke horizontally across the page.
3. Hopefully, along with the path shape, the way I created the gradient (lighter/darker) components emphasises the curvature as desired.
4. If I need to hone the light and shade then I either use a use a soft brush black or white, with large pixel size or I use a gradient with foreground (black or white white) to transparent with the appropriate paths providing the selection required for the extra light or shade – blend mode and opacity changed to suit.
5. The raised centre of the ring was created with a smaller path and then I used 3D extrusion filter for depth. The shadow and seam of the raised ridge was created simply by stroking the path with a black line (I think 10px) then blurring and changing opacity to suit.
6. The pattern on the centre ridge is from a brush I made representing the Aboriginal symbol for human tracks.

Basically that is it for the ring method.

For creating gradients, whilst there is a method included in GIMP under the Gradient Editor, I normally use one of -

1. A script called 'sample-gradient-along-a- path.scm' – whereby I typically fill a layer with different colours and then draw a shaped path to extract them to a new gradient. Thois creates standard .ggr files.
2. A plugin from Trandoductin called 'svg-gradients.py' which creates and modifies gradients that are .svg files.

I still use 2.8 but have just checked them in my 2.10 portable and they both create new gradients.

Hope this is what you were looking for. As far as these latest gradients were concerned I have to admit that I used the pattern of a gradient called Steel-Pencil as a guide to get light and shade in the right positions.

I also have used Apophysis, JWildfire, Weavesilk and Xaos.

Cheers

OMG

OMG, you have written very good instructions for making the ring. Would you put it in the tutorial section?

Racer, I really love the shine and color of your ring. Was it all done in Gimp? How did you get it so shiny?
