I think I have finally got it!

Tried my hand at another coloring last night and did an 'eye'
Pretty happy with this one although still not really good.

Awesome, Sallyanne. Don't have the patience for such endeavors and haven't really got a good handle on how to use G'MIC to do this right. Glad you have figured it out.

Thank you Lyle, Kimba and Wallace.
can't give GMIC the credit for this it was all done in gimp. No GMIC at all. Someone showed me how I could use 'saving selections to channels' to save time too. And from a couple of different places have also learnt about what some different layer modes will do.that are good for this.

I still haven't checked that video out yet Wallace re the layer modes.

Thanks Isabella. There is the interactive colorisation in GMIC which (I assume Lyle thought I may have used it) I have yet to master it/
