i am really against disable critique in the art board and i would not like much a new Focused Critique section.

I believe who post art here like, even hope to receive comment ,and feedback that in my opinion is better if may include critique...sure we all appreciate even more enthusiastic reaction, but critic may be even more helpful

And about what is "constructive criticism " and its limits the argument will lead to endless debate, because if the "white" and the "black" are clear , there are so many degrees of gray ....

i believe except maybe few extremes, as exploit of trolls soon banned we never saw similar problem here on GC

And on the other hand i believe the artists soul need always attention, encouragement but are time that even harsh critiques may be very helpful

As for my self i love receive comments and encouragements, and for the critiques i would not like force who spent time to post a critique to use prefix lines as
"Really nice , interesting concept and original work ..."

to make acceptable a follow up as

"but the shadows seems wrong and the proportion off "

Because if forced by etiquette or the desire to be polite compliments my sound worse then spontaneous critique

For me this rather creates a situation where people who I know normally wants feedback forgets to explicitly say so in their post ... is that now because they don't want feedback for that particular piece or did they forget? Will offering an opinion in that thread now suddenly bring mods to bear? This will certainly lessen my inclination to offer spontaneous feedback. If I'm not allowed to offer an honest opinion (because it was not explicitly allowed or most likely forgotten to be allowed by the poster) then I'll rather avoid posting.

The purpose of having the banner is supposed to encourage more feedback, not less. Using the wording "If you would like a more detailed and focused critique.", kinda has a built-in implication that the poster should expect some critique. The hope is that the banner will prompt them to specify if they wanted an even more detailed and focused critique of their work.

I do see your point, in that it could be misconstrued to mean that if you don't explicitly request detailed critique, no critique at all would be given. We certainly have no intention of moderating members' opinions regarding images posted by another member, in the Art section or anywhere else on the board.

I would prefer the opposite wording ("let us know if you do NOT want feedback on your work"), since not censoring the response thread is (in my mind at least) the default position for anyone posting their work online. But whichever people feel comfortable with by all means.

Using this kind of wording is an option, but it would invite less critique and ensure that we would have to moderate opinions, if someone ignored the request and posted a critique anyway.

I've distanced myself from the discussion in this thread because it has drifted away
from reasonable conversation to the realm of fears and superstitions.
And I certainly don't want to look like someone who wants to destroy peace on this site.

The whole thing got me thinking and I have decided to restrain myself from giving
my opinion on other people work except for a few persons that I know would not mind that.

I completely agree with K1te, This is getting much too complicated. Either make a separate section called "focussed critique" where you can post any work (photo, paint, drawing, restoration, blender, anything) for honest / no frills critique or don't bother.

Griatch

If you read my first post, I pointed to the same direction as you. But then here have explained to me that the change was primarily to emphasize/remark when an user required a critique to make a profit on it.
I think that there is no misunderstanding and no one thinks that is being censored, the banner could use a footnote:
"If you do not express anything, that does not mean users can not opine/critize about your work."
But in good English, of course

(also @YAFU explaining)

I see. I read it as a way to protect artists who cannot handle/don't want critique. If the purpose of the banner is solely to help mark the threads which like to obtain a more intricate or longer critique, then fine. On the other hand it then doesn't really serve much purpose either and could just as well be removed. ;) I don't see the difference between a "focused" and "normal" critique. I guess I just didn't know such a dichotomy existed - it's a sliding scale highly dependent on the requirements of the image in question.

Griatch, I think early on in this thread we came to the conclusion there wasn't much need in having a critique free zone, for a couple of reasons. Why even have an Art section if you're only going to allow comments like..

"Cool, I like it." or "It's OK but I really don't like it"

Those types of thumbs up or thumbs down comments are kinda useless, unless reasons are given as to why, which would be critique. Personal galleries are really the place to simply post images for display.

The question then became, should we have a separate section for a more detailed and focused critique and the thought was that a banner, prompting the user to request more detailed critique, might be a useful alternative to creating a separate section. I now see how that might be confusing, as well.

I'm beginning to think that the old adage "It it ain't broke, don't fix it" might apply here. :hehe

I never thought of it as a fix, more like a step forward.
But you are the boss, GnuTux. Take the banner down [I find it confusing too] and
we just move on.
