Resizing a resolution, setting ppi

Greetings all! I'm a GIMP novice, and I'm trying to resize a graphic so that it is 400X400, and 72 ppi. It seems that I'm able to do so, as shown by my first upload, but when I save the file, it changes size, and a blank white space is added in on the right side (see 2nd upload). What am I missing here? All I want is the picture shown in the scaling grid. Thanks!

Upon seeing how my attachments displayed, let me add that the, "How it comes out" picture has had a white rectangle added to it on the right side, one that is the size of the checkered layer shown in the scale grid. It doesn't show on my post, because the whole panel is white.

Once you have scaled your image.
You can Autocrop it or manually crop it.
By doing this,
you'll be eliminating the empty space seen in your image.

You can access the Autocrop command from the Image menubar through,
Image>Autocrop Image.

After you've cropped your image.
Export the image as you did before.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Next question...how is it that I see so many usernames which don't seem to be using any of the GIMP username requirement? (i.e. having to use a number, an underscore, a capital letter, etc.).

I'm not exactly sure what the "GIMP username requirement" you're referring to is?

You are resizing the layer and not the image. Use Image>Scale image.

Hi Wallace, when I created the user name and password for my account, I was only allowed to create a user name which included specific characters, like the ones I listed. I'm sure I've overlooked something, but I recall trying to create a user name that didn't have such characters, and getting a message along the lines that I wasn't meeting the requirement.

Of Nuts: Thank you for your reply. I initially used the scaling tool to get the specifications I wanted, but when I exported the image, the space I thought I'd gotten rid of reappeared. The solution came via Wallace's instructions of using autocrop. :-)

Sorry to here that you had this issue.
However,
I decided to create a test account to see if this is indeed an issue.
The account name I tested was JohnyJon.
There were no requirements for me to enter any specific characters,
as you mentioned.
I'm sorry that you had this issue.
From what I can tell.
This isn't a part of the standard way of registering,
for an account here on Gimp Chat.

If you use "Scale image" there will be no space. The scaling tool scales the layer, not the image, so the layer becomes smaller than the image and there is space left. "Scale image" scales everything.
