Earlier today GC was slow as molasses (especially the home page: 35 seconds to load according to Firebug)). Then it entered "GimpTalk emulation mode" (Database error). Soon after it was back up and considerably faster... Must have some memory/handle/DB connection leaks somewhere :)

How were other sites working? I know my wife and kids were on this morning and cursing about how slow everything was. I went in and bounced the router and cable modem, and it was still slower than a snail.

Events like this are fairly common on a shared server. The server probably just needed a reboot. The hosting service I'm using does a pretty good job staying on top of things, except on Sundays. They tend to be short handed on the weekends.

The night before last it was down, but only for a while. I'm doing without my laptop right now, to lose GC too would drive me over the edge to complete insanity. My mental health and well-being are in your hands.

It's actually a Linux based sever. The host I'm using has been good for last 5 years but they could go to hell in a hand basket tomorrow. Over the last year or so, support (via support tickets) has gone from 30 minute response times to several hours (longer on weekends).

Another interesting happening is that while cost of most things have been going up, the cost of my hosting plan recently dropped by 1/3rd. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The original concept was to pay a little more for a minimally shared server so there would be more resources per account. Hope they aren't loading up the server now that they've reduced the price.

My forum was just a free proboards forum, but this is a lot nicer. I thought someone was probably paying for this nice of a forum. Thanks, I for one am very grateful for it. I was either too cheap or too poor to upgrade mine but I never had much traffic anyway. My hope was to have a community that accepted everyone and wasn't exclusive and snobby but apparently people prefer the snobby environments.

I belong to an awesome adult forum based in the UK. Its privately owned but because numbers are down at themoment they have taken some advertising to help pay for it but its a great hideaway.
