I thought I had this issue solved by changing the power cord. It was okay the next day but every day after that I had to unplug the power cord and plug it back in to make the monitor come on.
Last night I switched monitors with my husband, not the cords, just the monitors and now he is getting the same thing on his pc.
Now, to me, this sounds like the problem is the monitor and not the cords. Is there any way to test the monitor to see where the problem is, OR is it toast?

There are at least two cables coming from the monitor. The power cable (connects to wall socket) and the video cable (connects to PC). On some monitors, the video cable can be detached. On other monitors, the video cable cannot be detached.

When you swapped monitors, did you also swap the video cables or is it that the video cable cannot be detached from the monitor?

It almost sounds like your monitor is going into power saving (or sleep/hibernate) mode and not waking up. It could also be that your monitor is dropping video connectivity altogether and connectivity cannot be reestablished until the monitor's power is reset, which would suggest a failing monitor.

If all you need to do is reset the power in the morning, you could continue using it until it completely dies. :hehe

Can you provide the exact make & model of the monitor so we can check to see what kind of video connections you have?

The monitor may have a bad capacitor or resistor. I have an issue with my monitor, but in reverse, my monitor will not stay off. Which is a symptom of a bad capacitor, so I've read and have confirmed by conversations with my local tech guy .
I've remedied the issue by placing an inline switch on the extension-cord which the monitor's power-cord is plugged into. I will eventually need to replace my monitor.
You may need a new monitor, if all else fails.

Thanks guys. I will look up the monitor specs in the morning and post them before I go and bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Personally I would check for dry solder joints.

It's highly likely that it's a bad capacitor as Wallace says.

We have had numerous monitors fail here at work (various manufacturers), and one of our engineers takes them home, replaces the bad capacitors. and brings them back the next day.

You should be able to find someone to repair it locally.

Are you sure you don't want a newer BIGGER monitor?

No I am not sure but I don't like listening to whiners when I want something bigger and better. I really wouldn't want one too large cuz I don't do enough large graphics that would call for purchasing a large one.

From the specs I don't see anything that would indicate that this monitor had any kind of sleep/hibernation or power saving modes.
It also has a Video Graphics Array (VGA) and
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) connection.

If you have replaced/changed the VGA cable. Without result, sorry to say, but you may need to have the monitor replaced or repaired.
It might not be cost-effective to have this monitor repaired, due to the price of labor, troubleshooting and replacing/repairing any defective or broken parts.
Unless it's still under warranty.

I believe you are right Wallace, those techies aren't cheap and it is about $100 bucks just to look at it, then there is the labor and parts if needed. I have already decided, I think what is best for me.
I will keep using the other halfs 19"LG AND let him have my 22" DELL and he can unplug it from the monitor every day, ... or, I may just go out and buy a new one, still undecided, don't want to listen to the whining bit. :teeth

Yeah, if you get 5 or more years out of any monitor/TV these days you're lucky. Use it until it dies. That's what I'm doing with my monitor and it's going on 6 years old now.

According to the manual (page 5), it does. the monitor automatically reduces its power consumption when not in use. As the computer detects input from keyboard, mouse, or other input devices, the monitor automatically resumes functioning

Molly, thanks for the model number. I have a few questions and some suggestions.

Image

The above OSD (on screen display) message is not listed in the manual exactly that way. Is there any other text on the screen or is that all? More information could help troubleshoot the problem.

There is an option on your monitor to perform a Factory Reset (manual page 19). You should go ahead and reset the monitor back to a factor state, just to ensure some internal configuration has not gotten messed up.

There is one option on your monitor (manual page 16) where you specify which type of connector to use (VGA or DVI-D). It looks like the default is to auto-detect. You could change that option from "auto-detect" and tell the monitor exactly which connector to use. You can determine which connector you have by looking at the end of the video cable and comparing it to the image below.
Image

If you determine that your connector is VGA, check the pins in the end of your connector to ensure none are bent. Bent pins are common and can cause all kinds of problems.

If you are currently using VGA and your computer's video adapter (on the back of the base unit) has the option to use a DVI connection, you should get a DVI cable and try that. DVI is a better way to connect and has a more crisp picture.

If none of these suggestions correct the problem, you probably have a failing monitor and you will eventually have to have it repaired or replaced. Repairs can be expensive so replacement is probably a better option.

Note: It might be a bad capacitor or it might be something else. Bad caps are easy to fix. They usually bulge or burst when they go bad. Bad ones can be easily detected and replaced with a soldering iron. I've replaced many of them over the years. A fair tech will probably charge $50-$100 to repair. A new monitor can be had for $150-$200 so unless you find someone to do it cheap, you're probably better off just buying another monitor, if it dies completely.

Gosh, that is a lot for a dummy to digest. I copied it and made a pdf out of it and blew up the text so I could see it. I will try to see if I can decypher it after supper.
First of all I guess I better change the monitors back so I can try to work with it on my own pc, instead of that Windoze 8 crap one. :teeth
Will post back later.

Ok. The first thing is to check the cable connector for bent pins and reconnect securely to your PC. Then perform a factory reset of the monitor. You might also want to turn off the connector "auto-detect" feature and specify the connector type.

If the monitor problem still exists, we can try completely disabling power management in Fedora, in an attempt to prevent the monitor from going into power saving mode.

Ok, I checked the cable and it is a VGA and has no bent pins.I think I turned off the auto-detect feature and I specified the connector type. as VGA. I looked at the back of the monitor and saw the slot where a DVI cable goes so I will wait until morning and see what happens before I go looking for one of those next. Keep your fingers crossed... :lol

Did you do a factory reset (page 19) before turning off auto-detect? If not, you'll need to do the factory reset, then go back and turn off auto-detect and specify the connector type.
