I also like the interface, it looks very cool and is really intuitive to use. The only thing that bothers me is that I keep looking for the time in the lower right corner, out of habit... :D

Anyone got advice on the gimp 2.7 issue?

Your desktop (Gnome, KDE) certainly has this as a configurable desktop widget. Here the right side of my KDE screen:

Hm. I think I'll still be using windows gimp for drawing. Bamboo just doesn't seem to work well in ubuntu... I got the pressure-sensitivity working, but other than that it hangs up all the time and responds poorly, and I can't disable the touch function which is annoying.

1) my Bamboo works better in Linux than it did with XP

2) Ah, Unity... a new beast that obviously doesn't please everybody. I've seen it on netbooks and it's OK there (small screen, not too many apps running) but I'm not convinced
it's OK for advanced users on bigger machines. OTOH I don't care, I use Kubuntu (Ubunt with KDE).

Good for you... for me, this doesn't seem to be the case. How did you get yours to work? Is there some drivers I can install or something (other than what already come with the ubuntu)?

Thanks guys. And thanks for the tip cecilia, I'll check that out.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I messed up something while compiling 2.7 (probably) but it seems really buggy to me... docks disappear, toolbox acts weird... I know it's not a final version but I don't think it should be this messed up, maybe I should try redoing it. Can I just delete the gimp-2.7 directory with rm and do the compile steps again, or is there something more that needs to be done like in windows?

Also, I still haven't gotten pressure sensitivity to work on my tablet, the wacom package seems to be installed and gimp recognizes it, but doesn't seem to be getting the pressure information... got to look into that too.

when you wish to uninstall something you should do it cleanly. use Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic package Manager or if you like typing (something I try to avoid) in the terminal. or use Tweak.

just deleting a folder may still leave a few "problems"

I have a Bamboo fun tablet and I got it to work (sort of) by going into the GIMP preferences (input devices or something, not looking at it now) and choosing "screen" for each function, pen, mouse, eraser.

some tools expect the pen and ONLY seem to work with the pen.....once I got used to that it seems to work ok

I'm still not totally sure what is going on :hoh

oh, and I only use stable versions of programs including GIMP because I just need things to work, the end

Yes, but the "sort of working" is not good enough... the drawing is pretty much impossible: the cursor keeps hanging up, half the time I try to draw nothing shows up, etc. It's just really, really glitchy.

Which is why I probably have to keep using gimp on windows... I'll probably just use ubuntu-gimp for plugins etc. that I can't get for windows.

@dd,
Welcome to Linux.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom
Maybe you already visited this site.
I am a long time Linux user > 10 years.
What I read in this thread about the safety of Linux is sometimes wrong.
lylejk suggested that if more people start using Linux it will be attacked also.
Wrong: > 60% of all servers run Linux yet they are safe.
It has to do with the way Linux works with permissions.
*buntu is the only (afaik) distro that makes use of sudo with user password to make changes to the system.
This is rather unsafe.
I wrote a howto for installing Gimp-2.7 from git.

Thanks gerard... I did see that page (your first link) already, unfortunately it didn't help... the wacom packages are already installed, but it still doesn't function properly in gimp (painting behaviour is erratic and keeps having "hicups").

Thanks for the gimp link though, I'll look into that.

How is it unsafe if you have a strong password and don't give it to anyone? Just wondering...

is this using the stable version of GIMP and the newest one??? both?

I have no trouble drawing....only with the pen. my setup doesn't let me draw with the mouse (not that I would want to, really). I realized something was up when I tried to Erase and I was using the mouse. as soon as I switched to the pen it "suddenly" worked. by now I just switch when I have to do make selections, draw erase and so on.

I checked gerard's first link and my /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-wacom.conf file looks like this:
Section "InputClass"
   Identifier "Wacom class"
   MatchProduct "Wacom|WACOM"
   MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
   Driver "wacom"
        Option "Button2" "2"
        Option "Button3" "3"
        Option "KeepShape" "on"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
   Identifier "Wacom serial class"
   MatchProduct "Serial Wacom Tablet"
   Driver "wacom"
   Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4"
EndSection

# N-Trig Duosense Electromagnetic Digitizer
Section "InputClass"
   Identifier "Wacom N-Trig class"
   MatchProduct "HID 1b96:0001"
   MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
   Driver "wacom"
EndSection

if I run xsetwacom -v --list dev I find (among other things):
... Found device 'Wacom BambooFun 4x5 eraser' (11).
Wacom BambooFun 4x5 eraser ERASER
... Found device 'Wacom BambooFun 4x5 cursor' (12).
Wacom BambooFun 4x5 cursor CURSOR
... Found device 'Wacom BambooFun 4x5 pad' (13).
Wacom BambooFun 4x5 pad PAD
... Found device 'Wacom BambooFun 4x5' (14).
Wacom BambooFun 4x5 STYLUS

I haven't done anything with That info, and maybe I should. But frankly, I'm not sure what I should. And it's not like I've got a problem. yet

Yep, both. Using the pen is pretty much impossible as it is now... it "sort of works", but...

Ok... my /usr/lib/X11 doesn't have the xorg.conf.d directory. I have it in /usr/share instead... not sure if that matters.

And there, I don't have a 10-wacom.conf file, but I have a 50-wacom.conf file. Anyway, it looks same inside, so I'll try adding the settings you have, see if it improves things...

Ok I tried those settings, and now it doesn't work at all - the cursor is stuck to the right side of the screen... :/

well, I have the 10-wacom.conf file because I use 10.04

maybe you should try the "Method 2" found in the link Gerard posted
Method 2

Another option is to configure your tablet from the console every time when you turn your computer on using xsetwacom, such as

xsetwacom set 'Wacom Intuos3 6x8' 'Button1' '1'
xsetwacom set 'Wacom Intuos3 6x8' 'Button2' '3'
xsetwacom set 'Wacom Intuos3 6x8' 'Button3' '2'

for exchanging your stylus buttons (not all options can be set this way, for example "KeepShape" option mentioned under Method 1 doesn't work using this method).

Note: 'Wacom Intuos3 6x8' in the previous commands is the device name. You must replace it with the actual device detected on you system. Such can be found using: xsetwacom -v --list dev

To make your changes permanent, simply open (or create) the file .xsessionrc in your home directory and add the lines above (you should use your own configuration, of course). After that, simply log out and back into your X11 server, and your tablet configuration will be applied.

Found some more info:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/l ... figuring_X

Why using sudo is less safe.
In order to gain access to system files an intruder would need the superuser password.
If the sudo script is installed an intruder would have to know the users password only.
In a system without sudo the user has to be a member of the "wheel" group in order to gain superuser privileges.
In that case the user uses su and is then asked for the superuser password.
If the user is not a wheel member su won't work.
Thus two passwords instead of one.
If you would like to know more about Linux then read this excellent book.

Not disagreeing with you as to the security of Linux Gerard. I'm just saying that there is no such thing as 100% security. All software is written by man (or woman) and human beings make mistakes that can be exploited. It's just a matter of time. Windows is the obviously OS to exploit since well over 80% of all OSs sold and used are for Windows (iPad for handhelds; already seen exploits in the field for iPads too). As it becomes more profitable to do so, Linux will be exploited. Good for Linux that patches come out quick since it is supported by such a vast group of geniuses, but still, when you have whole Governments like China (and I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S. didn't either) just looking for exploits and how to take advantage of them, it's just what it is (a platform to be targeted and exploited). I double-sandbox (use an XP VM and Sandboxie inside my XP VM) but even I am not 100% sure this will stop a hack (but so far has given me super immunity). Every so often I go back 6 months and re-patch my VM so that any possible exploit would loose it's place, so to speak, if I do somehow get hit. That's the beauty of Virtualization; only takes seconds to recover like this (but the OS updates can take long; lol). I very rarely use my Win7 to browse online. I try to keep my Win7 very isolated and so far for over a year no issues has happened at all (well, I did do something stupid which required me to recover from a 2 week image once; yes, I do image (but no where near as often as I should). If there was a foolproof OS, I would like to know, but I do what I can to keep Ephesians Ch. 6 in mind w.r.t. my OS and browsing. lol

:)

As you should Cecilia. Windows is the the big daddy of OSs and as such, more folk are trying to take daddy down. One other exploit for Linux users, believe it or not, is Wine so be careful if you install Wine (one other program that I've not installed yet for my new 64-bit Ubuntu. Waiting a few more days before installing all this stuff mainly since I'm just plain lazy right now. lol).
