I grabbed gedit thanks.
Tux i have an error when trying to run virtual box

[rod@Rod ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@Rod ~]# /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules                         [  OK  ]
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules            [  OK  ]
Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMSError! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.5.2-1.fc17.i686 (i686)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/vboxhost/4.1.18/build/make.log for more information.
                                                           [FAILED]
  (Failed, trying without DKMS)
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules                      [FAILED]
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
[root@Rod ~]#

Filter Forge will not run on wine so i need vm to use it. :)
I got a startup error when launching the virtual server (Windows_XP) that i created.
So i installed dkms and updated the kernel
Then i got this error when running the vbox setup command.

Any ideas on how to get this running?

Does that error mean i have the wrong version of VBOX installed for my Fedora OS?

I've never used VirtualBox but I assume you can just install akmod-VirtualBox. akmod will automatically recompile modules each time a new kernel is released

The error messages suggest that you don't have GNU Compiler Collection installed. Try...

yum install gcc

You might need other development packages installed as well.

For kernels mods..

yum install kernel-devel

yum install ncurses-devel

You can also install a group of commonly used development tools with the following..

yum groupinstall "Development Tools"

Hope that helps!!

Tux you are a Saint! :)

I have one more question for you if you don't mind me picking your brain again.
I was able to save my music folder in my F drive (low and behold), but they are all MP3 files.
Now how do i play my MP3 audio and video files in Fedora?
Can you recommend a good MP3 player?

Glad to hear you got vbox running. :bigthup

I assume you have the rpmfusion repos enabled. If not, in terminal as root ..

rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

I recommend amarok as your mp3 jukebox. It's the cats meow of mp3 jukeboxes, with wikipedia support for the artists, lyric servers and automatic downloading of cover art.

yum install amarok xine-lib-extras-freeworld

A good basic mp3 player is audacious..

yum install audacious audacious-plugins-freeworld*

For videos. VLC is the way to go..

yum install vlc

This is a good Fedora resource site..

That is strange that yum install didn't work.

Hi Rod.
Now it will be easier for you to install and test Krita (from Calligra). What Krita version is available for Fedora?

There is no package for Krita available in Fedora-17 that I know of. It says "Krita package not available".

@molly, Have you tried searching with the "calligra" word?
I read in google that is necessary to add the unstable KDE repository in Fedora, but I do not know how to do that.

It wouldn't come up with yum install but it is in the add and remove softwares. I downloaded it with no problem.

Sounds like maybe you were not logged into terminal as super user (admin/root).

sudo (super user do) allows you to execute a command as root, without being logged in as root.

In other words, executing..

sudo yum install vlc  (asks for root password)

from terminal as a regular user is equivalent to..

su - (asks for root password)
yum install vlc
exit

When you just have a single command to execute as root, it's easier to use sudo. If you have multiple commands and or operations to perform as root, it's better to login as root, execute those operations as root, then exit. Otherwise, you'll have to enter the root password each time you use sudo to execute a command.

Calligra Krita 2.4.3 is the current version available in the stable Fedora repos.

sudo yum install calligra-krita

or login as root and run

yum install calligra-krita

There are some of the apps that you can't put on the dock the one click way, you have to right click on the dock and click the config. Tux will have to help you will that. I forget the codes. I have one I haven't been able to add too, and that is Vuze.

Yes, you can right click the dock and select add/custom launcher. Enter the name of the app in the "Launcher name" box and the command to run the app in the "Command to run on click" box.

Another method is to navigate to /usr/share/applications and copy the launcher there to the desktop, then drag down and drop it on the dock.

I highly recommend that you install at least one other desktop environment, just in case Gnome goes south. XFCE is lightweight and gives you another option to get back to a desktop and fix problems if (or when) something goes wrong in Gnome.

sudo yum groupinstall XFCE

Does sudo take a different password than root? I typed sudo yum groupinstall XFCE and it wouldn't take my password so I went the usual way, su - then password then used yum.

I don't use sudo because I'm on the side that believes there are security concerns with allowing users to run as 'root' using the sudo command. I only suggested using sudo because it appears that Rod added his user to the administrator group, either during the initial F17 install or at some later point.

You can read more about enabling sudo in F17 here..

http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-f ... .html#sudo

Thanks, no I will stay with su -. I just asked cuz I thought that is what the command was to get the XFCE. I did install it but haven't looked yet to where or what it is.
