"Tim's Vermeer" is a documentary film, directed by the performer Teller, produced by his stage partner Penn Jillette and Farley Ziegler, about inventor Tim Jenison's efforts to duplicate the painting techniques of "Johannes Vermeer", in order to test his theory that Vermeer painted with the help of optical devices.

The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in limited theatrical release in the United States by Sony Pictures Classics some time in January of 2014.

Very interesting.
I'm curious about what conclusions reached.
Thx Wallace!

Well, just finished watching then entire video (since Vermeer was one of the artists that got me to doing artistic simulations in the first place; my own obsession. lolol). Fantastic video Wallace and thanks for sharing it. I do appreciate this more then you would know. I am still a lazy filter guy though. lol

:)

I didn't remember this thread, as an association with this posting. Optics like this are amazing to say the least.

I hope that those who viewed the video realize how accurate "Tim's Vermeer" was, and that he (Tim) isn't by any means a "trained artist".

I'm happy that you guys; in particular, enjoyed and commented on this video. I found it to be most intriguing as well as mystifying, in it's own right.
This film is truly impressive in it's magnitude, which gives the art and the "artist" Vermeer a different perspective. No pun intended... :hehe

It was awesome Wallace. I was showing my wife some of it last night, and she really enjoyed it too. I watched part of it again today.

Had a busy day (helped a friend w/ a bad computer issue; ended up rebuilding his OS and it took over 9 hours; sad. Despise Vista. lol). Anyway, just felt like giving a Vermeer a try and below's a link to my poor try at it. :)

I've watch the video a few times myself and am amazed that this was not discovered sooner. This documentary convinced me that this is how Vermeer went about creating such great works of "art", that are flawless in his usage of light akin to photography. There seems to be some that say that this is not "art".
"It's not how one arrives, but rather that they get there at all"
It's still a great achievement for it's time, be it art of not. Which isn't up to me to decide, nor would I want to make such a distinction.

I think you did a great job on it. :bigthup Did you use optics??

BTW... Vista stinks on ice, to put it mildly.

Nope; just a heck of a lot of filters (G'MIC, Paint Engine for starters) in very creative ways (used G'MIC mainly in the creation of Convolution layers (set to Grain Merge) with filter operations on the Convolution Layers themselve. This is a proprietary technique (i.e., I am way too lazy to explain how I did so; lol). Thanks for the words of encouragement Wallace. Vermeer was one of the 3 main artist that inspired me to do Photo-Artography in the first place nearly 15 years ago now (past 12 years more deliberately). :)

Okay lylejk, still looks good in my humble opinion. I'm also a big Vermeer fan and enjoy your filter work very much.
Just a wishful thought... Sooner or later you will have to treat us all to a tutorial, in length, of how you do what you do so well.

Vermeer's paintings might be 350 year-old color photographs

Yeah it's still good.
The link you posted has some nice photos. I didn't expect to see the "Tim's Vermeer" video with your link.
I think it's a much nicer link to the video.
Thanks Odin. :bigthup

Thank you for the link. I have watched the whole film and I found it a very compelling argument that Vermeer used some sort of optics. Here is my attempt at a Vermeer like light in a photo. Done with Gimp of course! Date 2010 at Flagstaff Hill Warrnambool

He didn't use any gadgets to produce Vermeer like paintings.
