What will we do if people have no jobs?
means no money to consume from same businesses that are automated.
Must we abolish money and enter a socialist society?

www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

only one day up and it already has 870,954 views.

That's the conumdrum Tran. Even my job's in the process of getting automated so I am beyond concerned. What the pundits don't realize is, if everyone gets replaced by a robot, then who's going to buy the milk? With the population exploding and, at the same time, jobs being replaced by automation, what will happen in the end's going to be ugly I'm afraid.

with no one being able to buy milk, the government has to print money and give it to the people to buy milk how else will we live? or there might be huge riots where hungry people will purposely destroy robots.

Remove the "s" form the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, then post.

See the example, no "s"...

I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

OTOH they also said that for agricultural machines, automatic looms, telephone, computers. Jobs gets displaced... instead of working in the fields, people went working in factories, and then left the factories for offices... Some years ago I was supposed to be made redundant and replaced by somewhat less expensive offshore developers. Now my job is to explain these offshore developers what to do and how.

What worries me more is the dogma that things are going well only when the economy "grows" but economic growth only means burning faster the earth resources, which are finite. Our grandchildren will hate us.

the robots age might come sooner than we expect!
While we're on this topic here's another video of robotics serving sushi in Japan

There was a twilight zone about this. I, for the life of me can't remember what the name of it was. >.<

Maybe "The Man In The Cave".

Not to make light of the subject, but I believe that making machines overly "usefull" is a bad idea, bad enough we can control how warm our house is from work and we have a little vaccme running around when we program it, not to mention those machines in stores that are "self serve" registers that control every move you make or they freak out.

offnuts,
yeah burning resources is scary too.
So the ideal businesses should seek toward sustainability and break even with no growth or shrink, if they're able to perform the same as the previous year than it's good enough, but many are greedy they always want to grow more and more. We must change our attitude.

There must be some things that can't be automated, although I can't think of any offhand.

Even art and music are being automated; soon, people will not post here anymore and the bots here will actually show their stuff rather then spy on us. Sad day when that happens indeed.

The robot-composed music in the video was barely good enough for elevators. Of course the idea that Justin Bieber can be replaced by a robot tat you can turn off between concerts is rather appealing.

Interestingly, this "new technology will lead to us all losing our jobs" discussion has likely been going on for more than 2000 years and often with much higher intensity (you can imagine everything from new plowshares and the use of oxen meaning fewer workers were needed in the fields, to the closer and more well-documented outcry when steam engines began to be used in agriculture).
The answer is that as old jobs go away new jobs will be created that didn't exist before. There were no place for office workers or programmers in the pre-industrial world, we will be saying the same about the new professions that come in the future. Society will shift to keep people busy in different ways. Like it always has.

Common sense says you are right Griatch, but we have leaders that don't have any sense and that's the problem. :)

Hm never tried sushi - don't like the look of it.
We must keep with 'doing' things because how would we know how to cook for ourselves or anything if our electricity was cut - or any power? People have done it in the past and we need to know how to now and not just rely on new technology.
Thanks for sharing and making us realize how things might be going.

So will robots build robots to build robots? There will always be a need for programmers. When i ran an RJ series robotic mig welder with 6 axis it needed constant monitoring by a human to correct the position of the mig nozzle. Also new products called for new cycling programs. Build a new jig for a new part and you needed a new program. Robots will not be able to do this ever especially for custom made jigs that may only run 1000 parts. There is no way robotic technology will ever surpass the human brain. There will always be a need for robotic programmers (humans) to load programs into the robotic data banks. So most jobs will probably be in the field of robotic automation and/or mechanics and maintaining of these robots.
