Hi, I recently had a need to print a photograph in Black and White. My printer, Canon Pixma mp640, prints beautiful color photographs, but when I try to print a B/W photograph it has a color cast. The color cast may be yellow or green or a bit of both. I can print in grayscale mode but not in high quality image mode .
I am reasonably convinced that this is a result of the printer's internal printer code.
Can anyone suggest a printer that prints pure (black tank only) black and white images in high quality mode on photo /glossy paper.
Or does anyone know of a way to print from the black tank only in high quality mode.

A very quick look at the printer forum on DPUG lead to a review of an Epson 3800 which apparently has multiple shades of black inks.

It is possible to replace the colour inks in some (Epson only??) printers with a set of blacks.

With your existing printer, using the black only, you can only deposit drops of black ink - there's no grey-scale, so you are effectively producing a true "black and white" image.

Hi, Kevin , It seems that producing a high quality (black/grey ink tanks only) is only possible on high end (expensive) printers. I always thought that grayscale from one black tank was done with varying droplet dispersal per pixel. It appears that this is not good enough for high quality resolution so grayscale defaults to normal quality. Thanks for the link to DPUG. It is very informative and has effectively confirmed my suspicions that most common household printers are incapable of producing a high quality black and white images without a colour cast. This is not detailed in the write up for the printer. Nor can I find a definitive statement from a printer manufacturer that describes the quality black and white or grayscale print process.

Pressing help on the grayscale box in my printer settings says that it uses black ink only and defaults to normal print quality.

Thanks for your reply
John
