Hello.

I'm having a serious problem with Firefox, and was hoping some Linux-heads could help me out.

OS: Puppy Lighthouse 64

For the past 2 months, Firefox started crashing unexpectedly. Over the weeks, it just seems to have gotten much worse, to the point of barely usable.

I have tooth-combed possible causes / solutions with google, but nothing seems to resolve it. In fact, it's now worse than ever. Things that I've tried via the google results:

* Installing Gstreamer.

* Uninstalling flash. (I don't use flash, but I'm not 100% sure that it has been cleanly removed)

* Disabling all plugins aka "safe mode"

* Refresh Firefox factory settings.

* Updating graphics driver

* Update Firefox (not applicable as I always keep it up to date)

* Clean install of Firefox.

That last one was my last resort, so I'm at a total loss now as to what the culprit is. Running Firefox from the terminal also fails to give me an error message after a crash.

I have noticed that the crashes tend to happen the most whenever I'm trying to open a folder, saving or uploading a file. Viewing Youtube videos is another one that seems to trigger it, but not always.

I have just tried to install Palemoon - a Firefox fork, and it's the exact same story there.

I've already submitted several crash reports via the dialogue that appears after a crash, the first report was submitted over a month ago. However, it's gotten so bad now that the crash dialogue doesn't appear anymore.

Have you used the Firefox Browser Console (Ctrl+Shift+J)?
It's different from the Web Console in DevTools.

I'm not a Linux user, but I have read that creating a new/different FireFox profile. Then use it in place of the original profile, to see if you still get these browser crashes. Has sometimes helped to narrow down or even solve issues for Windows users of FieFox.

Wallace is right, if all else fails try a new profile.
Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles

Thanks all, but nothing seems to resolve it. It's pretty severe. I think determining the problem is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

I've decided to start afresh with a newer version of my OS. On the downside, it'll take weeks to get everything set back up the way I had it. On the plus side, it will resolve some other issues I've been having. I've been using this OS for 2 years solid, and I've probably made a mess of things along the way with the way I've been installing dependencies. The newer OS has a new dependency installer, so that way I'm not just tracking them down all the time via console error messages anymore.

The problem started with me when I removed flash and switched to HTML5, which I intend to keep using from now on. It must be the libs required to play MP4 files that are causing the crashes with Firefox.

Migrating to the newer version of my OS will be no easy task, it's a 10GB savefile that I need to re-create and that'll take weeks.

I'm sticking to my original OS for now, and have switched to Opera as a transitional browser. So far no crashes at all with it. Latest version is Chrome based, so I might give that a go as well.
