Gimp Chat members in the US should perhaps get involved and share this widely... seems like the powers that be have been trying this for a while now.

EDIT: Sorry if this is deemed to be political. :/

In a nutshell...

Currently,
when you access the internet on your phone,
tablet or computer,
you get to view websites and watch video at pretty much the same speed everyone else does.
The traffic you create simply by browsing the web is treated equally,
by the companies that have built the infrastructure of the internet — internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast and AT&T,
and "interconnect" companies like Cogent and Level 3,
which route and direct traffic between you and your internet provider.

This state of affairs,
is called "net neutrality."
Everyone gets the same treatment.

If this equality is taken away,
we will all suffer.

In a nutshell, the removal of net neutrality will mean that the network will be fast only for the services that pay your ISP for it. All the small fish and the volunteer effort can potentially become second class citizens:

* forums like GimpChat
* software sites like downloads.gimp.org
* Wikipedia
* your favorite BitTorrent site (and the bittorrent connections) :)

Unless it happens the other way: for a while, my ISP (that covers around a third of the French home users) slowed down Youtube connections, because they represented a large majority of the bandwidth usage. They wanted Youtube to pay... They eventually lost because we have a net neutrality rule here (and AFAIK the EU still requires it).

I sincerely hope so!

and the flip side - you will only get fast access to sites you pay for. Here is a actual shot of a Portuguese mobile carrier billing structure - a country without Net neutrality:

This their pre-paid offer. But the usual "unlimited" is here: https://www.meo.pt/telemovel/tarifarios/unlimited more expensive, but in line with what you pay elsewhere (which is, a lot more expensive than in France, but we have a rather healthy competition among carriers).

Also, a must read: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11/2 ... e_roundup/
