Thanks O and nixnne.
Couple of years ago I bought "Just for Fun".
It's written by Linus Torvalds and David Diamond.
ISBN 0-06-662072-4 (bc) 2001.
It's a biography of Linus and how he built Linux, met his wife etc.
Nice reading.
Gerard.

I've never used Linux, but I found the article fascinating.

Here's the actual first post to Usenet on Aug 26 1991, 2:12 am that got the Linux train rolling..

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os. ... 249ef4a554

Anyone actually remember when Usenet was the cat's meow? I used to spend most of my free time on the "alt." and "comp." groups, all day, everyday.

Long live Linux!!

heh heh, yah I used to be on alt.music.queen a lot. That is where I discovered the whole world was available as well as what flaming and wide open unmoderated forums were all about, lol. I haven't been on usenet in over a year. Maybe I'll go check it out again one of these days, lol.

We Finns should be more proud of Linus (Linux too!). For some reason, Linux enthusiasm is now waning here. Maybe it's just that there is no money in free apps, people are desperate to earn with skills and services. Economy is in bad shape, IT jobs are very unsecure.

Another thing, I really miss those newsgroups. They were such a nice way to see what's happening. Now every interest area has it's own forum or website. It is getting tiresome to go through all those...

Well, I'm posting this from Ubuntu Linux and I'm very happy with it. So, let's hope Linux has many fine years to come...
