Has this been done yet? Is it possible? Can we attempt it?

I've always been undecided about picasa. I've installed and removed it at least 4 times. Not exactly on topic, I guess.

Since I've never used Picassa, I have the same question as PC. What effect is cool and unique that can't or hasn't been duplicated in GIMP? Just curious. :)

i installed picasa 3 times but i used only once.
that only 1 time I did try the filters, i am always curious about filters, but i didn't noticed nothing worth attention.

Picasa users may daydream about have equivalent of gimp filters, but i doubt the contrary

I was just curious if it was possible. I agree on all of those points, its not for me but instead for a friend who wants to use gimp but is dependent on picasa. If I can find some mirrored filters/better filters as I want to build him a custom set up in gimp.

more than the filters he will miss the functions ( automatically parse the HD to search all images, arrange in folder, convert from RAW ... ) for sure gimp miss many of them also because is not a image viewer/organizer as Picasa

For similar uses Xnview or irfanview would be more indicate than gimp

I haven't seen anything Picasa can do that GIMP can't do better

Well picasa and gimp do different things so I don't see the conflict. Picasa does have some next functions and filters, I just have other things that do the same thing, hence my indecision on it. Also I just feel that people are allowing google to have more and more control over their lives with all of their online services. I know picasa isn't a online application but it seems to lean that way with every version.

The other thing is that all(?) Picasa's filters are non destructive and can be undone.

To avoid confusion i believe we have to split the question in 2 parts ;

1)Picasa FILTERS could be added to gimp ?
2)Picasa FUNCTIONS could be added to gimp ?

as for 1 i believe the answer is mostly negative, they could not be added as they are now, and even if possible would mostly duplicate of filters already included, so would no be worth

for 2 some of the most interesting function (i.e load image from picasa album, send edited image to picasa album) could be be ported, maybe even in a more flexible implementation (as load images from picasa album/flickr/ deviantart/others, send images to
picasa album/flickr/ deviantart/others )

and that in the example may be even useful and i believe there is already something similar (i believe i had a gimp script to upload/download to flickr even if i unistalled because i have better solution to do it).

But those are no functions proper or adapt to a graphic EDITOR but for image VIEWER/ORGANIZER, and would be a error use gimp as image viewer organizer ( a single script to import/export to online album may even fit nicely in a Graphic editor, but the other would be out of place)

They would be useful for Irfanview, xnview, and similar app, out of place in gimp

because again gimp is not and should not become or be used as a image viewer/organizer so should NOT include similar function,
for the same reason why OpenOffice writer should not include a huge group of logo script, or advanced image filtesr (but remain still be able to just scale up or down the images to insert ) or a 3d raytracer

In few words when similar functions are needed that means is time to switch, to close Gimp or Photoshop, and open Picasa, xnview or another similar program

Use Gimp as a viewer organizer is as use a knife as was screwdriver..it may even works for loose screws but is not adapt , exactly as a screwdriver would be not adapt to cut (even if could be used to cut very soft bread or cheese...but not without messy disadvantages because is not that its proper use and function )

I totally agree PC. Sometimes I wonder if this is still a Gimp forum or some other place.
Why do we need to compare to other APPs? There is enough to learn in GIMP that would take a lifetime without going elsewhere.

thanks Molly ,but maybe i was too verbose

in few simple words i believe that is the very idea to replace Picasa with Gimp a serious mistake.

May be worth learn to use ALSO gimp, also a graphic editor but not as replacement because no graphic editor may or should try to replace a image viewer/organizer

So you may replace Picasa with xnview, irfanview even with iphoto (i hate iphoto , so i am not suggesting it ) not with a graphic editor.

Back to the knife vs screwdriver example:
it may be worth in case you have screws to unscrew forget your knife and get a screwdriver, but not to consider screwdriver as a good knife replacement
...as you will notice at soon you will try to prepare sandwiches with your new screwdriver

I had a large collection of pictures that needed to be reorganized. Picasa has a face recognition function that does a decent job of matching people's faces an allowing you to group them.

I had so many pictures of my grandkids that were grouped by event. Finding a particular one was a nightmare. Now thanks to Picasa, I also have them grouped by their names.

Wow, alright, fine! All I was asking is if the filters had been mirrored already (or could be) I didn't say gimp should compare to other api's not once! I was asking for a friend who think Picasa classifies as an Image Manipulation Program. I was trying to create him a custom package based off of Picasa so that the transition would be easier. ANd on top of that he hates how picasa auto searches his hard drive, never uses RAW format, and could care less about facial recognition. He wants a true image manipulation for post photography work but was always to scared to move to gimp and hates PS. So thanks for letting me know how useless this topic even was.

I see and agree with your point but anything that might improve gimp is worth considering. Plus, isn't that why we have off topic chat? Frequently Rod, Lyle, I, and others have had conversations about Inkscape. Still, unless we focus primarily on one thing, gimp, the forum will be chaos.
