I am designing holiday postcards for my husbands business, Before I start I need to know what resolution setting I should use. I am thinking around 300 dpi but I want to make sure.

Location: not from Guildford after all
300 DPI sounds about right. You should check the resolution of the printer you will be using to print the cards and use that setting.
