The issue with Gimp is that 'batch scripts' are run from a command line and Gimp was never developed as a command line tool.

G'MIC and GEGL both have a command line capability.

How To Run A GMIC Filter On Hundreds Or Thousands Of Layers

This is similar to the Gimp G'MIC-Qt 'apply to all layers' except this command will usually stop at a limited number of layers (frames).

We had a lot of fun doing animations back them :)

What version of Gimp are you using? Batcher is a great program for batch processing images.
If you are using Gimp-3.
