my first post

I've been dabbling with GIMP for a while and learning/playing with various features, like the amazing wavelet decomposition, etc.
However, now a friend asks me if I can improve on the motion blur in a picture. I'm including a small cutout below, that best shows the vector. I'm not sure how much can be done here...?

I have found some guides online, but I guess I need step-by-step instructions. I wonder if anybody know of a good detailed tutorial or want to give this one a try and tell how you did?

Note: I'm aware there might not be much that can be done.

That's a pretty wicked blur. I don't think much in terms of facial features are going to be recoverable. Gimp is amazing, but it's not magic, meaning you can't just get it to guess and add the correct pixels it needs to make a sharp capture out of something like this. You can correct smaller blurs somewhat, but even then you're going to run into accuracy problems fairly quickly. Something that's wiped into a blur as far as this, you're probably out of luck. I've tried several sharpening techniques and I end up with a sharper blur, not tighter features, if that makes sense. I frankly recommend a steadier hand and quicker shutter speed to prevent this from happening again to future shots.

Welcome to Gimp Chat hyperchaotic. I'm with ek22 - with blur of this magnitude, I'm not sure there is a lot that can be done.

No magic bullet with Gimp alone.

But this may be doable, in particular because the move looks very linear, but this requires a specialized app (I don't think there is a Gimp plugin for this). Google for de-shake or un-shake.

Checked that one out ofnuts and it is also available to be installed on Linux, Some of the images looked cool in the folder included.

Thanks all for the welcome and thoughts on the blurred picture.

I ended up cleaning it up with the unsharp mask, just playing with the values (radius 10, amount 2.80, threshold 0). I tried the refocus-it plugin but couldn't seem to find good parameters, so sticking with unsharp.

It doesn't remove the blur but the original 6000x4000 image does look better. The cutout attached.

Yeah, that's about as close as I got with it. Blur is wicked evil.

I would like to see the algorithm that could fix it.
