Dinasset, it's currently hot here in Spain, the penguins photo was taken last year at an aquarium. I like this section very much, I'm starting to play with available filters in G'MIC. Thank you for your opinion about penguins photo.
Here, the original photo is called "Lion"
I applied to it - G'MIC - Sharpen (shock filters) and then I applied to the resulting layer, Tone Mapping. The change on the photo is great in general, even more on his eyed zone, in my opinion.

nice outcome, the lion is very well defined, maybe you could fade out the background

Smart quote dinasset.
I've applied Gaussian blur at the background but I get a white aura around. I don't know how to remove that.

I guess that the white aura is due to the fact that the area subject to the blur included small white parts of the lion's contours.
I'm sure there is a nice selection method to perform it appropriately, but I'm not able to do it (tried but no good results)
So I decided to "smudge" manually the background

I like very much your duck variation, it's very appealing the result. but what does GEGL op mean?
About the lion, I did the selection of the background with layer mask, could it have affected the result? Thank you Dinasset for your try.

Applying G'MiC filters, I've got some enhancement on the original photo.

you know, my personal taste is for more colour and more contrast..

Thank you so much dinasset. I've taken notes about unsharp mask as other way to apply on a photo to improve it.

I love your boys, pirate. The effect is very nice, I like it a lot. It gives the pic like a beautiful atmosphere.

This is a new try. I wanted to highlight the colour of the duck, so applied contrast some filters and finally applied a dark vignette around.

Original...I'll thumbnail it as the iPhone takes hi-res pics.


Gimped...duped, motion blur bottom layer, layer mask top layer to keep face sharp, slightly lowered the saturation on the bottom layer, slight upped the saturation of top layer.

very well done!
