Using Map Object along with Filter All Layers and a lot of setting up, one can make an object appear to fold along an angle somewhere between 0 and 90 degrees:

Image

In the above, I took a rectangle, set up a lot of guides, rotated the rectangle about 26 degrees, cut off various selections of the rectangle, used Map Object and Filter All Layers to animate those selections, combined them with what was left of the original rectangle after cutting, rotated everything back minus 26 degrees to essentially arrive at the above animation.

One could even make extended animations, like for instance, after each piece folds over, fold part of that piece back. Naturally, the more folding involved, the more complex the animation, the more setup work will be involved.

This was an experiment just to see what it would take to make this sort of animation type using Gimp. Thanks for checking it out.

:)

P.S.: I purposefully left out the shading/lighting part of the folding animation. Adding it in would add to the realism of the effect, but again, this was the result of an experiment to see what it took to create this effect.

That is astounding, ccbarr. I'm going to have to ponder that for a very long time. I never cease to be amazed at what can be accomplished with GIMP.

That looks like it took hours of work, thought and experimentation.

Excellent!

molly,

Thank you kindly

O,

You're right, it did take quite a bit of planning and experimenting to get it done correctly. Thanks for commenting.

Rod,

That idea of folding a piece of paper into an airplane would be a good challenge in Gimp. Neat idea and thanks for commenting.

I'd like to see a tutorial on how you did that. Could be applied to a lot of different things.

Pretty cool.

Nixnine, Did you ever see this great animated card tutorial by ccbarr? I did it a while back and it is great.

ccbarr, I have been wondering about this tutorial for over a year now. Would this be out of the question to do using GAP?

nixnine,

Thanks for the comment.

I won't promise anything for certain, but I have begun thinking about a tutorial for this effect. One of the steps that I had to use to make the above was multiple animated layer masks. That process required a lot of different steps using the Frames Modify function of GAP as well as Move Path. I'm hoping to find a way to avoid those. Otherwise it would make for a very long tutorial.

Thanks again.

:)

molly,

Yes, GAP can be used to make the animated card animation.

:)
