Back in 2010 PhotoComix published
Fun with the Mathmap Composer , for dummies here on GimpChat. PhotoComix tutorial used still images, but Composer also works with animation (although mostly undocumented).
In the above animation, 'rounded rhombus' and 'droste wip' are merged with Composer. Amazingly, Composer combines the filters into a single code that can be saved and used to build other complex animations. It's even available as a new menu entry. With the animation above I could access a composite 'User values' menu that came from both filters. Hidden in the many sliders, values and background effects is an 'auto set periodicity' option. Tick that along with the 'Periodic' tick in 'Settings' and you can make your animation automatically finish at the same place it starts. (that's the meaning of periodic in MathMap) I found the 'Preview' button on Composer doesn't do much with animation.
I usually go for 72 frames because its a divisor of 360degrees. The 'Parameter t' slider in settings gives you an idea of what the animation will look like after you adjust the many 'User Value' options. 'Parameter t' doesn't show how accurate 'periodic' really is but you will see the result in the finished series.
Many of the MathMap animation filters don't work with Composer. I've done a survey of the animation filters and any filter with 'in2' in 'User Values' needs 2 different layers to work with. Many of them, like the ones by nevit are similar to video transitions. I can't see how they would work with Composer. The animation above was made from one layer. The more geometric filters may work with one first and another second but not the other way round.
I will do a list of filters that work with Composer eventually.
Ubuntu 18.04
I'm currently compiling on Xubuntu 18.04 and highly recommend this release. So far MathMap and Gimp-Gap compile pretty easily on this stable release. I test on Gimp 2.8.22.
