From time to time my "distorted" mind think about the possibility to get a new filter in G'MIC taking inspiration from external programs.
I know, I've not been very successful so far, more or less all those "challenges" are still open: do you remember?
1-a G'MIC version of the "Smart deblur" program
2-a G'MIC version of "Mediachance Quick HDR" with many presets (like "Filter Emulation" does)
3-a G'MIC version of "Ulead Particle"
Nevertheless, I like to enter a new challenge:
-a G'MIC "Photo Mosaic" filter
My idea is to start from the excellent currently available G'MIC Pattern/Mosaic filter.
Then replacing each generatied small "piece" of the mosaic with a small image taken from a user folder, based of the "average" colour in it.
I guess the problem could be having G'MIC accessing an external folder, maybe it's impossible, maybe not...spes ultima dea
To give an idea I attach here two images:
-one generated by G'MIC Mosaic filter
-one geerated by Artensoft PhotoMosaik
What would be nice is to have the same "mosaic" generated by G'MIC but with an image in each piece.
(i.e. not having the regular rectangular image of the source folder, but the irregular piece now created by G'MIC...)

That's a really cool idea, I hope it works for you, I have no clue how to code.

Thanks! I hoped too, David!
But up to now no other reaction.
Roughly dividing the audience between G'MIC gurus and G'MIC users, is seems that:
- the challenge proposed is either impossible or too hard to implement by the gurus
- the challenge proposed does not encounter the favour of the other users.
sigh...

Seems like a really nice idea, it would be quite tricky depending on how it's done but definitely possible. Reading directly from lots of files from the gmic gimp plugin can be... interesting :hehe (see example code in my "stereo video" filter). It's another thing I'd like to have a go at but other things must come first!

Thanks Garagecoder!
What you say are really good news for me (it's possible!!!).
Just to have a look at the results of your "stereo video": which input is required? the comment on your filter says "a series of images", but probably there is some other prerequisite; I tried with a folder of my preferred images (they are all the same size, but .jpg, maybe this is the problem, another image type is required...)

editing previous message:
I remember that you told me that .jpg files are not supported by the G'MIC open function.
Thus, I converted my complete folder from .jpg to .png.
Now I get the following error:
*** Error in ./gcd_stereo_vid/*local/ *** Item substitution '{expression}': Invalid item 'l' in specified expression 'l'.
Is there maybe a limitation in the number of images? I have 509 images on my folder!

editing a second time
reduced the set to 10 images
now I get the following message
*** Error in ./gcd_stereo_vid/*local/*repeat/*if/*repeat/ *** Unknown filename 'F:\Quadri\5starts_onlysome\Berou ... r_drape_rouge_1920_reflected02.png'.
Is there a limitation on the length of the filename?

uhm..
I have to wait on your reply
I reduced the length of the name but I still get the same error message as before (Unknown filename..)

Ah, didn't expect you to actually try using the filter (was more just pointing out the type of code needed for loading of external files)!

It's supposed to take a series of numbered images, such as {image1.png,image2.png...image500.png} which you might expect as output from previously converting a video to images. Really to use it I need to write a guide, I could probably add instructions to the bottom somewhere.

just to revitalize this other G'MIC challenges topic.
Maybe some new G'MIC guru (Souphead?) is interested in exploring...

edit: on "Smart Deblur" there is a specific topic (search "smart deblur"), also without a solution so far...
