Hi again,

My main PC is a lowly Lenovo A57 with a Core2Duo E4600 2.40GHz CPU, with 4meg RAM
(Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit) and many of the filters seem to take an age to run.

I ran the (marvelous) "Artistic>Dream smoothing" filter over a 4000x3000 image
and it took over 15 minutes. Does that sound about right for an older CPU such as mine?

Cheers,

Mike.

That is an awfully large image, maybe it takes longer when it is that size, try it on a smaller image to see how long it takes. If the time is shorter then your ram, speed etc is just fine.

Dream Smoothing is a slow filter even on a powerful machine. One thing that might help to speed it up, if you haven't already tried it, is to set the "parallel processing" option to two threads, as long as the CPU is a two core.

I feel your pain; might soon break down and get one of newer multi-core AMD systems or the i7 (my system is a barebones that I got as a gift from my brother back on Christmas 2008; it's showing it's age now. lol). :)

Hi mingle,
Your cpu is Intel.
Intel cpu's have "threading" since the P4.
(AMD's don't)
So you can set it at 4 cores.

I agree that it's a huge pic.

Another important thing is how Gimp preferences are set.
Edit resource consumption to 4 processors and play with thee other settings.
Gerard.
