I am not new to GIMP but completely new to GMIC. I use a portable computer with Windows XP 32 Bit SP3 and GIMP 2.8. I also managed to install GMIC 1.5.3.0 and its working fine and I do love the 286 filters coming with GMIC.

Now here is my problem. I downloaded a 39 MB ZIP-file containing both (GMIC for Windows 32 Bit and 64 Bit) This ZIP file is also containing a lot of additional great filters like photocomix or ian fergusson. As my portable computer will never be allowed to be connected to the internet, I am unable to update filters over internet and I would like to install them manually instead.

As I already know, this should be possible by putting all desired filters into one single textfile named .gmic

To try this, I just took photocomix.gmic from the ZIP archive and renamed it to .gmic

But now it seems I do not know in which folder I will have to put this .gmic file in order to work. I have put it into many different directories of GIMP but GMIC never loaded these extra filters.

Does anybody here has any idea in which directory this .gmic file must be copied or what else I am doing wrong?

I also need to know this because I'd like to try out writing some filters by myself.

I would be grateful for any hint.

You shouldn't have to rename or merge any files, just put all the individual filter (.gmic) files in the correct folder and it should be happy.

On windows 7 it's in C:\Users\yourloginname\AppData\Roaming so I'm assuming for windows xp it will be:

C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Application Data\Roaming or something similar - basically look for the gmic_def.1530 file and you put them in the same directory as that.

If you use my customized Gimp build (or that from Samj) you will found all gmic definition files stored internally , at soon you open the main gimp folder inside the "gmic_filters " subfolder

That also to allow to use all additional filters even if gimp is used as portable app
But i didn't updated yet the last version to include very last gmic release in case you should do by yourself
If you do remember that you should at least once refresh the filters (or if you could not connect from that computer , download the definition files from something else and copy there. )

First guess close but wrong, if i remember well (my xp desktop is dead so i can't check but i almost sure) in xp the gmic definition files are stored in

C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Application Data\

(so not in Roaming ), are not grouped in a folder , just files there, and i am not sure is as default those files are visible or seen by Windows as "System Files" to be hidden

The first thing i do when i get a new computer is to impose visualization of all system and hidden files, and to NOT hide extension names that alas is the stupid default

So if there you can't see the files you may try to enter in search > option for folders and there unmark the option to hide system files (again not sure if is needed for gmic files, but i suggest to do anyway, as to unmark the option to hide extension names for the most commune files the dumb default create only problem and headaches during search )

It is right that there is no Roaming directory under XP

but

C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Application Data\

as suggested by photocomix, did work.

I just copied the .gmic files into this directory and everything works fine now.

These additional filters are very useful and also I can learn now gmic filter programming by looking into the sources.

I don't use Windows anymore since I switched to Linux but when I was using Windows XP, this is the path I used to get to the roaming folder.
