How-To Geek has an article that all Windows users should read. The purpose of the article is to point out the Windows Store is filled with scam apps falsely representing free software.

Gimp is not mentioned in this article but (because of it's popularity), could be a future target for one of these scams. Can someone with Windows 8 have a look and report back?

Libre office is free. You don't have to go to any windows sites, you can just download it from Libre office site.

Why would you want to pay for gimp training when you can do all the training you want for free - just by trial and error.

You would be surprised to know how many people get sucked into that stuff.

I suppose you can give a software training app a pass, my concern was with ones who's basic function is offering an alternate way of getting otherwise free software. Just the number of VLC examples in the How-To Geek article is crazy. Microsoft should be tarred and feathered for authorizing apps like that in their store. It must be that race to the bottom of how many million apps your store needs to make your product seem more relevant.

You are right Odin, VLC has always been free, besides Microsoft isn't rich enough yet, they want to own EVERYTHING. Yay for Linux, the best OS ever.

Many people still can not believe that free software is something valuable. They think there is a snatch or a trick behind it. So, they prefer to pay even as little as £1.99 (or £ or € or SFr, etc). And many people are truly unsecure and believe a computer could physically get burst, if they handle software the wrong way.

I just convinced this afternoon an artist (not painter, more 3-D artist) to change after the season to Kubuntu and will help her over the first steps. She complained about M$'s megablunder, published today, with the latest update and the complicated way to reverse it. So, everyone who has the knowledge, does not matter with with operating system, can contribute by explaining the OpenSource philosophy.

SysTemX, I've always liked, Gizmos Freeware Reviews, another good one is AlternativeTo. Both these information web sites use official links to software downloads (when available).
