Hi Gimp friends
I took an old computer that was in my house.
The computer had a Windows 7 operating system.
I installed the Linux Mint operating system on my computer.
This is a picture of the main screen.
Of course I also installed Gimp the latest version.
I added G'mic to Gimp.
For fun I added software to see chess games.
In short, do not throw away old laptop computers that are running Windows.
With the free operating system Linux Mint they get a new life.

Yep, you can revive old hardware with distros that are specifically meant for old computers.
Linux Mint isn't the lightest one around, but it's very stable.
All my 5 computers are quite old (ranging from 2003-2010) with different Linux operations installed.
Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Mint, LXLE and one with WinXP and Sparky Linux. (not for online use)
It's just that the older hardware becomes the bottleneck at some point.

Happy gimping!

It's always nice for me to hear,
when people re-purpose,
or keep their "old" computers running.
:bigthup

I still use my 12 year old Dell Optiplex 745 mini tower,
which has windows 10 installed.
This old PC doesn't want to give up.
It just keeps on going.

I have one Optiplex 520. Sounds like airplane when the big front fan begins to rev and suck air in through the grill.

I'm familiar with that sound.

Witch Linux is the lightest one around?
Will it be a weak Linux?

Hi Nidhogg,

I have an old dust collector that's running windows XP & you mentioned that "you can revive old hardware with distros that are specifically meant for old computers"

Exactly what I've been wanting to do but wasn't too sure how or where to begin....

What would you recommend for an older machine, keeping in mind that I've only been a windows user, but I'd like to learn... :) ...

I guess there's been a few of us wondering the same thing.... :hehe ...

Many Thanks

I'm a windows user primarily.
However,
I remember reading somewhere,
that Lubuntu has fewer packages,
consisting of the mostly lightweight Linux applications.
I could be wrong,
so maybe someone else will chime in on this.

I'm aware that you are asking Nidhogg this question,
but I found this bit of information,
that you might find helpful.

That's great FlutteringBy.
I didn't read the entire page.
So I'm happy that you found the link useful

Hi FlutteringBy. You can do a google search like Wallace suggested, usually they mention the most popular distros.
I'm using distrowatch.com to investigate, you can browse there based on various criteria.
Linux Mint is stable and complete so to say, you don't need to do much afterwards. Just some theming etc. and you're ready to go.
But it comes with Gimp 2.8.22. If you'll try Mint, the XCFE desktop edition is always lighter than the Mate or Cinnamon.
Xubuntu and Lubuntu are also good and safe choices for a beginner.
I've installed Lubuntu on Acer Aspire One with 2GB RAM and one older HP Celeron Laptop to postpone their burial.

Let us know how it goes, good luck.
