Hi,
I read that some gimpers use photoshop filters.
I browsed the web and d/led something at random to see what the extension would be.
I found ppselsat.zip which contains a .8fb file.
I don't think this will work in gimp with Linux as OS.
Can anyone tell me what I should look for or is this simply impossible?
Thanks in advance.
Gerard.

You first need PSPI for Linux. Then, good luck. Better way would be to install Irfanview (via Wine) as your PS filter surrogate and do copy/paste between the two applications, but the problem with this one is Irfanview doesn't support transparency pixels, so layers with transparency won't give you the result that you may be expecting. Good luck on your quest (I had partial; having issues with PSPI and plugins that launch the preview Window for whatever reason using PSPI. Gave up and using the Surrogate method for the few times that I do use GIMP with Linux). :)

for run ps filter in Linux first you need to install WINE, then for using with gimp you will need to install a plugin called PSPI (download AND INSTRUCTION here http://tml.pp.fi/gimp/pspi.html )

Then most of times you will very disappointed because to the flaw evident already in the win version (a very crippled preview with most of filters) other are added in the Linux version )

I may suggest another way, i am so happy because just now i finished to test on ubuntu Linx and work s as a charm...all filters works and with a perfect preview.

1 again you need Wine installed
2 Grab the full WINDOWS version of xnVIEW from http://www.xnview.com
3 right click on the exe > propriety > permission check "allow executing as a program"
4 Now open xnview (from wine or from a link on the desktop...if from the desktop remember that again ,but only once, you may have to right click on the link>exe > propriety > permission check "allow executing as a program"

Now you are ready run Xnview OPEN A IMAGE go to filter>PS filter there click "configure" to add the path for your ps filter folder
(that you may place in your home folder as example)...from that on you may use any pS filter you wish and copy and past the result in gimp

and BTW installing xnview you are not installing crap just needed to run PS filters,in linux there are excellent image viewer/organizer but there is no match;
xnview can read basiccally any kind of graphic files including files with missed or mistyped extension
create and save as video slide show on the fly from any group of images
do all sort of ,even quite complex batch operations from a clear interface
( you may also wrote, execute and save new custom commands )

i stop here because i don't want publicize too much a free but ..alas..not OS software

i see only now your comment

i didn't finish to test copy and paste (i am finishing to compile gimp i want try the last 2.7) but there is hope that the stripped alpha channel was a problem of win clipboard..so in linux copy and past maybe will work even well even with images with transparency :jumpclap

Not sure even XNView supports transparencies PC. Most viewers don't (they fill them with a color of your choice; I picked grey for Irfanview). I know of no program that can execute PS filters and support transparancies other then hit or miss GIMP and, of course, programs like Paintshop Pro and Photoshop itself. If you run across a free viewer that supports transparencies, let me know. :)

BUT xnview do support perfectly transparency pixels
again i have yet to check in practice this last detail for copy and paste, but for sure the support for alpha is included in xnview

and it install and run in Lynx as a charm without need to search additional dll

PS about dll oldest PS plugin may require this 2 dll , zipped here http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/plugins/8bf_tools.zip
to install Application/wine/explore C driver /windows/system 32...add there the dll (just to be on safe side i made both executable first)....

I am so happy...a new perfectly updated and customized Lynx and all my plugins working :jumpclap

now i hope to guess how compile from git...anyway i saw last stable gimp on getdebian...

@LYlejk

i know well that Xnview support transparency.

to the point that if some plugin seems not work (as would your beloved "simple" filters) you have just to click xnview Image menu
and click "32 bit" that add a alpha that seems "simple" filter require, (at least if used from xnview )

and BTW xnview display the ps filters in a tree of well sorted category (AAAfilters, Medhi, Simple ) not in a big mess as irfanview

Indeed you are right about XNView w.r.t. transparencies, but not from clipboard unfortunately. You can always save the layer that you want PS operations on as a PNG file and the run XNView, resave and then drag back into GIMP. If you have a solution to the clipboard transparency issue, please let me know PC.
Like the tree view for filters too. You are right; much better then the clunky way that you have to add PS filters in for Irfanview. :)

if is just to apply 1 filter on 1 image no worth using trick just save as png on the desktop and drag thepng in the gimp image or layer window.

For more layers is simple but to explain i need to make 2 screenshoot...do you know a good utility to make screenshoot in Linx ?
(with 3 options whole desktop, selected area, active window )

Well thanks lylejk and PhotoComix.
I do have wine installed, occasionally I have to unpack selfextracting stuff like bios upgrade etc.
But from what you tell me no thanks.
To much bother.
I have quite a number of filters and plugins installed and they serve my needs so far.
Just installed apng plugin thanks to GnuTux's howto.
Gerard.

Sorry PC.
Overlooked your question about screenshots in Linux.
It depends on your desktop.
The two big ones are KDE and Gnome.
I used Gnome years ago, like KDE much better so that's what I have.
I am sure all of them have some app to take screenshots.
KDE has "ksnapshot".It has a menu to choose f.i. region.
Then you can make rectangular selection of any part of your screen.
Works like rectangular select in Gimp.
Thanks for your answer.
Gerard.

Thank Gerald i saw Lynx has already what needed pre-installed
...i didn't found immediatly because i look in Graphic but was instead in the Accesoires menu

too much ?..you have just to install a viewer and then copy and paste
Maybe i add too much details and that scared you...anyway you are right gimp has already a sufficent number of filters for all task ...extra PS or native gimp filter are not too needed

Sure my discussion with lylejk may give the impression that is a complicated matter :wh but that are details that you may just ignore (if you don't need to process with PS filters images with transparent area on a regular base )

@ Lylek

OK i am back,

if copy and paste is buggy and buggy in both direction, drag from xnview browser to the gimp windows is flawless :coolthup

so first if i havein gimp a image with many layer to be processed with ps filters i always export all the the layers first (a lot of script-fu to do this with a click, i use gap )...all in a new folder
Suppose now we call this new folder with the exported layers " exported_layers":

1 )open and process the first, save as png in a new subfolder created inside " exported_layer"

2 now you may process all the other layers,
save as will be really quick because you will just need to open the dialog and confirm (no need to change file name , chose a file format or specify were to save...last setting will be automatically used and that is perfect )

3 when finished to process all layers just click on the browser tab, open the new subfolder, select everything, and drag everything in the gimp layer window
(maybe you may want create in gimp a new "container " image with just a transparent layer to host them all...no needed if is open the no-image window )

Usually only use one layer at a time. What would be cool is to figure out a way to run XNView as a plugin inside GIMP (requested doing this for Irfanview at GIMPTalk a few years ago, and got the reply to copy/paste which is what I have been doing). Also, for whatever reason, Impressionist doesn't show up in XNView (had a lot of weird issues with this old (and unsupported) but extremely cool PS filter. Cool that, thanks to RobA, I already got this plugin running natively in my Windows GIMP. Just wish we could convince some developer to intergrate the Adobe Plugin Developers Kit (Not sure the exact name; many programs that can use PS Filters us it including Irfanview) for GIMP, even if it is a third party plugin (they pretty much relinquished Tor's PSPI to this status anyway). No offense to Tor; at least he figured out how to run PS filters using all open source widgets/programs if you will, but, though I could be wrong, I believe Adobe gives the Plugin Developers Kit for free. Anyway, if there wasn't so many cool PS plugins out there, I wouldn't care, but there just is. :)

You may send images to gimp from xnview (i did not test if that work on linux because i have no idea of the name of the linux ecquivalent of "gimp.exe"...neither i am sure that xnview will accept to send to something that has not a "exe" extension )

about sending from gimp maybe if the word "xnview " was included your request was frowned mainly for psicological reasons,

but a request for a generic "open with associate program" , giving smart examples of associated progras as Inkscape and Blender maybe could have better luck...because for sure would be a step for a better integration between OS graphic tools, a argument that lead to so many talks but no any fact

Labcurves is a python script that actually calls an external program (not a GIMP Plugin) PC. Wonder if something like this can be used for XNView. I'm not a programmer, so it's all Greek (well, maybe broken English; lol) to me. :)

I'm installing the Debian version as I type this to see if it will allow me to assign GIMP as an editor.

there is a linux version of xnview..but that will not allow you to use ps filter (and also for the rest is far to be cool as the Windows version)
