Hello!
Does anybody know how to obtain a license/release for the stock text fonts in GIMP? Or maybe the default sans font belongs to the public domain?
I am completely unsure, any help would be hugely appreciated!

GIMP does not provide any of its own fonts, but instead uses either the system's fonts or user-installed fonts.

For my GNU/Linux system, the Sans fonts are provided as part of the Red Hat Liberation fonts (these should work on almost any system). These are basically "public domain" except for the condition that if you modify the fonts, the modified version must also be "public domain".

fonts you wish to only use in GIMP should be placed in the GIMP folder
in my Ubuntu that's

/home/cecilia/.gimp-2.6/fonts
(substitute my name for your own of course) :lol
I forget where the fonts live in GIMP windows, but whoever here uses windows more often than I do can let you know.

With Windows, Gimp uses any fonts installed in Windows itself.

ah, think some of this is coming back to me..........once you place these GIMP-only fonts in a folder you need to go into the GIMP preferences and list that folder.

I never liked just shoving all my fonts into the windows font folder because that is one of the Many ways to cause your windows system to take a long time booting up.

That is why I use a font manger. Need to keep control of my 1500 fonts.

I use AMP: http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php

Have been testing Nexus font: http://xiles.net/downloads/#NexusFont and quite like it

but am saving up for MainType: http://www.high-logic.com/maintype.html as I tried the demo and found it the cat's meow.

very interesting.....I've been using a portable program that just temp installs fonts when I turn on the program. it's old and i don't even recall the name now.

however, I looked to see if my favorite portable method had NexusFont and it does. At least as a test. I will download this and when I actually boot up windows I'll try it out.
