HI. Just trying to get started with GIMP. Plan on looking at your tutorials. Had to switch from Adobe(student version which was relatively inexpensive) as I can't justify the high rates for my limited amateur use. Looking forward to learning from all.

GIMP is perfectly capable of professional-looking results.

Hi. This is my first post. I've been trying to teach myself GIMP in order to make a book cover. I've made a very fancy text I really like, against a photo background, but my background winks out when I add the text's chrome effect. I researched on net, apparently this is what chrome effect unfortunately does, it eats the background photo. Fix is apparently to copy and paste (i.e. superimpose) the text onto the background photo from the clipboard, but I am totally stumped on this, can't even find the clipboard much less copy something to it. Can anybody give me simple instructions on how to copy/paste fancy chrome text onto a photograph background? I've gone through a zillion tutorials, no luck. Thank you.

If you select, Edit>Copy of your chrome text, then open the background image. Create a new layer, above your background image, then select, Edit>Paste.
Your chrome text should then be on this newly created layer, above your background.
If need be, you my have to scale the text to fit how you like. If the text is to small, it's better to create text that is slightly larger or the correct size. Then it is to scale small text up to fit into an image.
You may also need to position the text after it's been resized and or pasted into this new layer.

Clipboard

Note on clipboard:
If the object copied to the clipboard is too large,
it may not show in the clipboard preview of the brushes/patterns menu.
Left-click and hold on any preview image within the brushes/patterns menu,
including the clipboard preview image and the image will grow into a larger preview, if available.
Release the left mouse button and the preview image will return to normal.

Welcome to Gimp Chat! :) :)
Friendly lot here. Ask any questions you may have and You will get someone who will answer. Usually doesn't take too long either as there are members all over the world...(in different time zones). Only time there is a quiet period around here is when there may be a holiday etc. I come in nearly every day if only for a look.

1. select Chrome text, Edit then Copy
2. select background image, add new layer above it
3. Edit then Paste.

Thank you for your help, but all I get is a new layer called "Floating Selection (Pasted Layer)" and my image is turned to: my title on top of a totally black background. My photograph [background] has still not reappeared. :gaah

1. Create chrome text.
2. Cop the chrome text.
3. Open the background as a new image.
4. Create a new layer above the background layer.
5. Past the copied text into this new layer.

Note: You must select, Layer>Anchor.

Are you using Alpha to Logo>Chrome?
If so, there are some things you need to do before you can copy the chrome text.
You will need to, Apply Layer Mask, by right-clicking on the mask layer and selecting
Apply Layer Mask. If you want to use the Drop Shadow layer.
It will need to be merged with the text layer above and then copied.

Thank you so much for your time, Wallace, but I am too much of dufus at this to understand your instructions when they aren't do-this-then-do-that. Here's what I got from your instructions (which shows what a loss I am at this).
1. Call up background photo.
2. cl add new layer
3. type text
4. Left cl ("select") text layer
5. Filters
6. Alpha Logo
7. Chrome
8. O.K. [This is when my background photo disappears from my image]. My top layer now has two black boxes in it, I am guessing this is the layer you are referring to when you say "layer mask"?]
9. click Apply Layer Mask [turns both of the black boxes into one checkerboard box]
10. Remove Layer Mask. There is no "Remove Layer Mask" in the window. Do you mean Delete this layer? I deleted it.
11. Copy the chrome text. There is no chrome text, it disappeared, all I have left is a small box with my title in it. I try to copy it, go Edit, Copy, nothing happens. Must be some other way to copy I don't know about?

12. You say at some point I must merge the dropshadow layer with the layer above, but I don't know when.
13. You say at some point I must select Layer Anchor but I don't know when.

I guess I'm just too dumb for this. It's a shame, I watched a tutorial on making a beautiful chrome-outlined, turquoise and shadow-filled text, which I had no trouble with even though it was complicated, and now all I want to do is stick it on a picture and I can't figure out how to do it or find a tutorial that knows. (All I found was one post saying you can't do it with Chrome, which doesn't sound accurate to me.) I would think superimposing text like this onto a photograph would be pretty basic, that people would use GIMP for this all the time. Then again they probably do, and I'm the only schlemiel who can't figure it out. :-(

I've tried to make my explanation very basic. I'm sorry that you don't understand.

I can make a video, showing you what needs to be done to get the text on top of a background image, if you think that might help?

ARE YOU USING, ALPHA TO LOGO>CHROME TO MAKE THE CHROME TEXT?

If so, you need to use the layer mask when you create chrome text using Alpha to Logo>Chrome. You don't want to delete the layer mask.

I made the video anyway and here it is...
