I've played around with graphics for a long time, but never considered myself good enough to actually charge for it. Now I've got a client that I let talk me into doing a logo for them.

My old Photoimpact just doesn't do what I need. I've found a few things that I could put together into close to what he wants where I could just tweak them, but they're Photoshop PSDs. Can't afford that so went looking and found GIMP.

It looks like it will do far more than I need it to, but I am so totally overwhelmed by it that I don't really even know where to start.

Looking at plugins they say things like require Python or "a MathMap" script. I'm pretty sure I've found and downloaded the MathMap base, but I can't find where to even start looking for the python one. I'm running under Windows XP Pro and don't really understand all the scripting or unix/linix/ubunto I see.

Anyone that could take a newbie by the hand and help me find and learn at least the basics would have oodles of good vibes sent their way. :hugme

Welcome, Diane! The best approach is to take it as you move through it. What is the first thing you want to accomplish? Add a plug-in, a script? Do you have a specific plug-in or script in mind?

Python isn't hard to add to Windows, but it does involve a series of steps. Gimpusers has a tutorial I think is probably the easiest and quickest to follow:

http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/inst ... -6-windows

Just keep in mind that you need to use a 2.6 version of Python for the 2.6 GIMP.

The newest Python versions 2.7 and up will not work with the Python scripts created for GIMP 2.6

the filters and plugins are great fun, but first learn the basics....like the incredible power of color curves.

once you get a good foundation the extra stuff will really be fun!

Welcome to our world Dianne. Plenty of help to be had here just for the asking. They are a great bunch of people here and I'm sure you will be amazed at what can be done with GIMP.

You know, you can open .psd files in gimp.

Libre Graphics just announced
Software This monday work on Google Summer of Code projects has officially begun. Some students actually make an early start, and this year GIMP students are one of them. Which sounds like a nice excuse to have a look at what's been happening in the project since 2.7.2 release a month ago.

So, what's up? Is the team making any progress? Why, yes indeed. While most of the work is under the hood and isn't user-visible, there are few quite worthwhile changes.

First of all, you can now add and remove vertices from the cage in the new Cage transform tool. That is, if you made a too fast judgment, you don't have to redo the cage from scratch: just hover the line between two vertices and click to create a new vertex, or select vertices you don't need and press Backspace.

Next set of changes improves file formats support. Layer groups can now be read from PSD, and when saving to PSD, color profiles are embedded. Additionally, blending modes are supported in OpenRaster files now.

A very small yet useful for some web developers extension is a new Python plug-in to save currently selected gradient as CSS gradient. It saves both canonical linear-gradient and browser-specific -moz-linear-gradient and -webkit-gradient.

The Cage Transform Tool has already been reworked to be able to grab and adjust nodes on the fly and is being reworked again to act as an instant preview on canvas tool such as PS Liquify tool.

2.8 is going to be very interesting indeed.
Google Summer of Code is already started, and Gimp students have jumped right in.

I'm sure its not the Kindergarten class working at the SOC, lol. It would be a good sign if they were, though. Hahaha.
