I joined Gimp Chat because I want to learn how to design and color cardmodels.

Will probably not post much on Gimp Chat because I do not know much about Gimp although I might ask some questions.

I live close enough to Lake Erie to walk to the beach.
My constant companion is a 95 Lb Rottweiler named Bentley.
He takes me for walks every day.
I also have a wife, two children and two granddaughters.
I am retired after working for 31 years at the Elyria Water Works.
Have been building cardmodels for the last 14 years and use them to play WW II wargames in 1/72 scale.
Defiance, Ohio was my home town.
I am a graduate of DHS(58) and The Defiance College(65).
Had a year of graduate school at Syracuse University but never finished the thesis for a Master's Degree.

I am trying to go through the Basics Tutorial (Floating Logo) but the author assumed more than basic knowledge.
I got as far as Bumpmapping but that did not work.
Perhaps settings need to be changed on the plugin but I do not know what or how much.
Then I tried to understand "Using the layer mask" but where it says,"Make sure you have the mask of the top layer selected", I do not know how.

The layer with a layer mask should show two boxes next to each other in the layers tab. One of these is the layer itself and the other is the mask. Just click on the mask and it is selected.

Welcome to a fellow Ohioan. Hope you get the chance to learn how to use Gimp. Once you get over the hump of learning the basics, it's pretty addictive!

After fooling around with the Bumpmap settings for most of the day, I finally got a Bumpmap which looks like the image in the tutorial.
It would have been so much easier if the settings had been listed in the tutorial.



I just found a new tutorial which appears to be a re-write of the old tutorial.
The new tutorial has the settings that I wanted.
