Several antivirus spread alarms about the portable version of gimp-2.7 and even on some plugin

i understand perfectly the concern and worries of many but the problems is that the company that sell antivirus understand even better and use it to boost the selling of theirs product:

more virus ,trojans, malware a antivirus detect , more would seems worth its price, even if most are "false positive"

Clients prefer products that give more alerts because seem more effective so it is not a coincidence that only the few Antivirus totally free in all their version correct (in a reasonable time) their database in case of false positives

But i am tired to discuss about (and i believe Partha that compiled the portable version of gimp 2.7 is even more tired than me) so i open this topic only to point to the best explanation of the problem, that is a big problem for freeware developers (big commercial company have very good lawyers, so theirs products never result as false positive , not even when contain adware )

I just want point to this link http://blog.nirsoft.net/2009/05/17/anti ... evelopers/ who want understand more the problem.

Hear Hear! Thanks PC! :tyspin

I get a lot of feedback everyday worried that gimprun.exe is triggering virus alerts.

FUD has always been part of the strategy on the part of some software out there.

What do you expect, its what happens when any product has any possible chance for success against any grade of commercial software (ex. GIMP is already starting to take profit from adobe [and I mean huge amounts]) many of the companies that work together to prevent any possible loss of profits. Also check half of your commercial software, almost guaranteed that they are monitoring your use now a days. Thank god Avast is very user friendly and allows for the possible to add to ignore list right off the bat. Well that and the fact that many of the avast modules were originally part of open source software. God do I miss the hackers of ole! When they hacked for the better of the open source w3.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity :)

when stupidity allow to increase the profit i call it malice.

If X antivirus report nothing but Y antivirus found dozen of malware, i would think the first be crappy and i will spread the voice that Y is much, much better

Especially if you now need to download Y's newest exe to get rid of said malware. (which actually adds more to your system ) so well NOW YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MALWARE REMOVER! and guess who steps up?... why Mr Y of course.

Oh and Mr Y will blame Mr X also. :)

The way i look at it is like this...
If you are afraid Gimp has viruses then don't use it.Go buy PS for 999.99 and run your malware program over it.I guarantee you will get false positives from that software also.

I swear i believe every commercial antivirus ware out there causes more problems then they fix, because they shut down your GOOD running programs because well...they flip the false positive malware switch.
I do not know how many time a day i now have to UNBLOCK my programs i NEVER had a problem with since i updated Windows malware program last time!

I even believe it or not had Windows shut itself down 2 days ago because it was preventing a problem with Windows !!! WTH!

well is a very effective way to prevent problems!

Will work also for flu , diabetes and even for cancer:
if you want prevent your beloved to get flu, diabetes or cancer you may just shot them in the head with a big gun (better twice to be on the safe side ) and they will never get similar diseases

Switch to Linux and say goodbye to the need for antivirus software.

Well, the family computer runs Avast! but got infected a couple of times nevertheless. The latest was some ransomware. The recovery rain dance was supposedly complicated, but the dual-boot to Linux made it a snap. My son got lectured on the risks of web browsing while under the admin ID (he was installing music software).

I wonder if it's possible that one of those big companies corrupts an OpenSource project that they have as competition, offering money to the developers so that the OpenSource project has a slow progress and not become a threat.

I think this is unlikely, but you can expect any move by these companies that make anything to keep profits. I admire our OpenSource developers because they refuse to be corrupted.

The sheer number of coders involved with free software have two consequences:
Bugs are discovered and squashed far sooner than in commercial.
Screwing up programs to make them inferior to commercial ones will,as a consequence,be detected soon.
So I have absolutely no fear that this will happen.

I can't vouch for Windows programs because of the opacity of this OS.
