Most definitely enjoying it. Gimp has come a long way on the mac. I tried using it way back in the early years for it. This was back when X window thing came around and I found it unusable and just too darn slow. This is by far a treat to use!

FYI... I can ask around for a few more mac testers for you. I really don't know how many of us there are in this forum. I can at least ask in other venues, I can ask they come here if you prefer to have all reports on this tread.

WW

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. I am too!! :)

Yes would be nice to see other testers. Everyone has a different perspective and they may find other stuff that we haven't tried.

Thanks for all your hard work WW!! Really appreciate it. :bigthup

I may have one more person to look at the program, she has laptop and uses snow leopard. May not be until next week however. I'll ask if she can join gimpchat and post to this thread. I'll do same for anyone else I can round up.

As for the link to download, is ok to pass that link to others? I'll wait to hear back from you on that.

That's wonderful!

Absolutely OK to pass the link around. It's still active.

As for G'Mic testing...

My test image... 1080x902, 205kb png Image

Arrays and Frames...no problem.

Artistic...mixed bag. I had issue with slowness during preview and even slower when transferring from G'Mic to the workspace. A few worked quickly enough, I had most problem with..

1) Ellipsionism ...this takes a long time to preview about a minute. Then about 5 minutes to transfer to the workspace. ( might just be my computer? ) Thinking now problem was with transparency? Anyway, I use a 512x512 png on this and not the above image as I could never get it to finish.

*mixed results really....each time either 5mins with one pic and 15-20min for another. Maybe is level of complexity. Who knows..upshot for me is it seems slow.

2) Graphic Boost... Previewed quickly enough, took much longer to write to workspace.

3) Pen Drawing... not sure of the result, didn't look very pen draw-y to me. Was more of a grey cast to the image. No error messages.

4) Water color... took long time to preview, then output didn't quite match the preview.

5)same with Psychedelic Glassworks, output didn't match the preview.

6) Pastell Art..hung up 2x (or at least seemed to me, ended up force quiting as I didn't feel like waiting for it)....this runs much slower than the previously mentioned Ellipsionism filter. I gave up on it.

All the G'Mic>Curves previews well and write straightaway.

**edit** Contours! not "Curves"

**edit** also Color and Deformations and Black and White work just fine too.

I have speed issues with not just G'MIC but Gegl as well when you using on Windows especially with large images which is coming now that the D800 is eminent.

I didn't find the watercolor filter with default values particularly watercoloy either. I think the above (in your previous post) are legitimate issues (regardless of platform) that we can share with David.

You've been great testing all this. Thank you so much!! :)

Hi All,

Just saw this thread while looking for something else!

I am on 10.6,8 (Macbook Pro) mainly for texture processing, normal maps, for use with a variety of other 3d stuff e.t.c.

I am happy to give it a go and report back accordingly... if there is a need?

Only if you are interested in cutting edge (bleeding edge?) Gimp for Mac that might crash on you and steal your lunch? :)

Just kidding. Are you interested in beta testing with us?

I will keep my lunch well away from it.....

Just pass it little morsels through a well monitered cage.

If it is of some use then yes.. but if not then that is fine!

I can send you examples of stuff i use Gimp for if more information is required.

Regards.

OH please do join in on trying to torment Partha with finding little crashes and burns!

Ok, Partha, I finally wrote down the steps for the foo-bar I have found.
Open Gimp
Open file
brush is, by default, is what is selected in the toolbox
Using the menu bar at the top, select>rounded rectangle
find the dialog box and drag over to where you can see it (dialog box is script-fu rounded rectangle)
by default, 50 is the rounding number
click OK
This shuts down Gimp completely for me.
If I use the rectangle select tool in the toolbox, and round it with the toolbox options, there is no problem.

Thanks 2-ton! I am aware of this issue. WW also reported this issue and I have replicated it on my computer. I think there are some issues with script-fu and Mac. I just to figure out what it is.

Still looking at G'MIC (what the heck :) ) now I am in Enhancements...

Bilateral Filtering giving me visually different results from the preview.

3/13/12 12:15:19 PM [0x0-0x1f01f].org.gimp.Gimp[219] [gmic_gimp]./preview/ -v -99 -gimp_bilateral_preview 37.3786,24.2718,4,0,0
3/13/12 12:15:27 PM [0x0-0x1f01f].org.gimp.Gimp[219] [gmic_gimp]./apply/ -v -99 -gimp_bilateral 37.3786,24.2718,4,0,0

Numbers look same but visually different... the preview is darker looking...the final image more color smoothed...

I really don't know these filters...just playing :) anyway ..just something to look at and see if you or anyone else notices this or my eyes just playing tricks.

This is good! At least it is not crashing on G'MIC.

I will try those filters as well. Have you compared the included bilateral blur filter to G'MIC bilateral?

Thanks!
Partha

All installed fine for me.

First crash was Filters Artistic Clothify selecting Cancel from the window or manually closing the window.

Second crash was running Artistic Predator (right after Edge detection Phase)

Confirms that something is weird with script-fu and Mac. So. something for me to work on.

Thanks!

Hi Partha,

Performance is great even on 12000 x 6000.

Investigating the layers window. Icon click to move layers up and down works fine however when i try to drag and drop to reposition the stack like i usually do it triggers a momentary pause then a crash.

As a cosmetic thing when i adjust a layer blending mode to 'value' and then try to change it back to 'normal' i cant scroll up all the way as the mac header obscures most of the 'normal' box. Just a tiny bit left to grab on my display.

It's quite liberating using your version, especially Gmic, dragging me out of the X11 darkages on my Mac.

This good to know. Try using the D800 samples from Nikon's website. :) The performance is good even there.

Drag and drop in the layer menu does not work on Mac. You need to use the up and down arrow. Yes, I know this is not good. :(

Thanks for all your hard work on this Mac version of Gimp!
Here's another Mac user, not a lot of spare time, but willing to test, if you still need testers. I use Gimp mostly for photo editing, on several machines - macbook with OS 10.5, mac mini with 10.5, iMac with 10.6. Also have an old iBook running 10.4...
