Partha has just released a new windows build of GIMP 2.9 with the GMIC compiled for high bit depth. It has an installer and a portable version. This is good news for anyone that has wants to try the new GMIC but has been unable to compile it for windows.

downloaded the portable version and updated gmic-gimp to 1.6.5.0 (the version included in the gimp package was 1.6.4.1)
so far so good
one question: where should I put in a portable version the file containing the personal gmic filters? in the installed version they go into .../AppData/user.gimp
but with the portable where does gmic look into?
thanks

edit: still there but with the previous name gmic, not the recent one user.gmic

Anxious for the mcgimp to lose the 'experimental' tag!!!

I did my first experiments and I got a surprise:
- create a new image
- fill it with whichever gradient (better strongly coloured)
- rescale the image one, two, three times...
- at each rescale colours tend to vanish

BUT if I select 64bits gamma when creating the new image then colours persist

does this mean that ONLY 64bits images may be manipulated in this version?

if someone likes to make a test on the Windows 64bits portable version (no risk, after the test the folder created can be thrown away without any trace left back):

1-download from Partha the Windows 64 the portable experimental Partha edition for Gimp 2.9 64bits
2-double click on the downloaded zip (it's self installing) specifying where to put the extracted folder (in my case I specified Deesktop)
3-open the created folder
4-execute the gimprun-2.9.exe

5-now open any image you like
6-go to Filters>G'mic: which version of G'mic do you see? pls post
7-do an image rescale (any size except the original one, because in that case rescale is not performed)
8-look at the colours: do you notice any change?

in my test I saw the G'mic version 1.6.4.1 and the rescale function degraded the colours sensibly
I sent already my comments to Partha
It's interesting whether you too get the same.

edit: g'mic version shown is 1.6.1.0

thanks Rod, same as me (first indication was wrong, I amended my post)
did you try to rescale an image and see whether colours vanish?

downloaxed and extracted the new 2.9.1 portable
G'MIC is now showing as the last update 1.6.6.0 pre
the colours management shows for me the following problems:
1-any image you open is detected as 8bits precision (correct) but is not processed as such: when you rescale colours wash out; if you force the image to be as 32bits then colours remain. Question: does this version ONLY manage 32bits precision images?
2-if you open the colours window to try changing FG or BG default colour, strange things happen: values for R, G, B and H, S, V show strange values and if you click on a specific nuance of the colour (let's say: red) the FG (of BG) is not changed. This happens to me also "forcing" the 32bits precision

Did someone install/try the regular version?
Is it working properly?
Did someone try the portable version 2.9.1 as I did? Does it work properly for him/her?

Why is 2.10 being delayed? That's my question. I like Partha's builds (used them in the past). Still, I want 2.10x; long (and like nearly a year) overdue. :)

good news!
the 2.9.1 has been updated on the Partha main site
the errors indicated previously have been fixed
colour management (and rescaling) are OK!
I will now continue to use it to see whether everything else is OK too.
Thanks Partha!

It is definitely everyone's wish. Unfortunately, the burden is on the shoulders of the few who are working "day and night" to see this happens sooner.

I say, do what the major guys (Apple and Microsoft) do and release the software and patch the bugs later. We are now at 2.8.14 which means there have already been 14 bugs patched since the initial release so, there is no such thing as a perfect program. :)

There are so few people working on GIMP that the only things we can do is either wait or contribute to development. Stay patient, it's coming!
