how do i switch back to the default pen? i was sketching over something then decided to start messing with the pens, and now i cant find the default one that i was drawing with, it had pressure sensitivity and quite a large range of pressure sensitivity too. it was black and by default slightly seethrough (i forgot the word, my apologies). :(

Unless you had already made changes do this.

This is in 2.10 so some of it may be a little different. You still need to click on that button though - hover over it with your cursor and it will tell you what it does.
For all tools the yellow circle with a blue dot (sometimes a square) with an arrow will take you back to default settings. There is another orange one without a dot that restores tool presets. You will find these in the tool options.

Perhaps you're talking more about the brush?
There's no single designated "pen brush" as a default in GIMP 2.8,
but the "Hardness 050" brush is commonly selected as the initial default when GIMP 2.8 is first opened.

Even in Gimp 3 the pencil tool uses a brush. Unfortunately the reset button doesn't change the brush so do what Wallace has mentioned (try the hardness 050 brush) or if you are sketching thin lines try the pixel brush.
Most paint tools use the brushes
By the way - if you want to check what the version is in future just click on the help button at the top of your gimp and choose about gimp and you will see there.
