launok: sorry i didn't get in earlier to reply, i was busy. it's just like erisian says (and yes, layers and layer modes work a bit different in gimp), but i also see i made reference to "bevel and emboss". there is a simple bevel script under filters->decor in gimp, but i didn't use that one and i don't think it would get you very good results on this. i used the python plug-in called layer fx. i don't know if you have it? link here otherwise: http://gimpscripts.com/2011/10/gimp-layer-effects/

Rod, if I am out of line here to post this, I am really sorry to refer to an outside link for PSP, but this afternoon I have tried an embroidery preset in PSP from a tutorial here: http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/chat/paint-shop-pro/38518-program-basic-brush-presets.html. My result is attached and not very good as I can't read the instructions in one of the menus as it's very small printed to follow properly. I was wondering if someone that knows PSP here can try it and convert it to a Gimp brush maybe!? I don't know brush making either! Even on the straight stitched line as on image the stitches are not very clear, in places just red cluttered pieces! :oops:

What I don't like on my result are all the rounded curves, where the stitches have huge gaps in. I tried playing with the PSP settings but couldn't get the gaps out. But then I have not much experience in PSP too! Otherwise the preset is not too bad. I was also trying to play with the bevel to give the stitch a more "rounded" touch in middle as in real machine embroidery (almost like 3D kind of look) but haven't succeed with that too.

Hi Molly, I have tried that too ... but I think the way I have made the preset is maybe where the problem lies. I think my settings are maybe wrong or something!

I guess I can't help there then, I don't know much about ps anymore at all. Rod's embroidery text works well if you try that.

If you save those presets as a brush , create an image from it (PNG). GIMP can open those types of images then you can save that as a GBR or GIMP brush file. After that it'a a matter of getting the dynamics correct.
