It's odd Rod, as mine I tested on, I'm sure I used other different font and the script ran fine and not problem with layers.
mackenzieh, have you tried "new from visible"? Don't combine layers.

No, I haven't. If we can't merge the layers, then what is the point with that option when running the script?

Well if you run the script with the default font selected it will crash no matter if you have the merge layers selected or not i believe. It looks for that font first before it runs the different steps in the script to create the effect.
Have you tried selecting a different font in the script itself?

The script was OK up to 2-8-10 but failed in 2-8-14 due to it's brush creation fields not including the line

(gimp-context-set-brush-default-size).

I have rectified now and the file has been updated on the initial post
