I just recently installed the latest version of Gimp after seeing that it now seems to support at least 16 bit images. From my research, I found that three options were presented for installation and I used snap.

I then wanted to at least try the liquid rescale plug-in to get content aware rescaling capabilities. Never having used plug-ins (or hardly even GIMP for that matter), I found it but it was from 2013.

I tried to install it and others from the gimp-plugin-registry, but I am unable to find them in GIMP (using plug in broswer). When I do a general system search, the plug ins seem to show, but they are locked.

I've been told that the plug in I most wanted (liquid rescale) seems to be outdated and may not even be able to run in the current gimp. If so, is there a more recent version available and, if not, is there another plug in that offers the Photoshop equivalent of content aware rescaling capability?

Appreciate any help regarding this.

The Gimp 2.10.8 AppImage has the LiquidRescale plugin already installed and ready to go. I don't know what all the hoopla about LiquidRescale is though. The few time I've used it were very much unimpressive. Maybe I used it wrong, but I doubt it.

racer-x, a big thanks for the appimage! Had I known one existed, I would have downloaded that first. I prefer to use appimages whenever possible. I understand they are still fairly new and not all programs are in that format. Happy to see that Gimp is, which means I can uninstall the two Gimps on my system.

Yes, I see that the rescale plugin is there and I tried it out. Once I make a mask to protect certain features, it might be useful. I used to use content aware rescaling when I had Photoshop and would sometimes use it on occasion to increase or decrease image while trying to maintain the same scale of the objects in the image. Results can be highly variable and it just can't be done on some images. I found its best use for images which offered objects of little detail, such as skies, water, etc. Of course, one could easily argue that content aware fill would do the same job.

Since I no longer use Photoshop, I switched to Affinity Photo on my Win 10 set up, but it still lacks several Photoshop feature such as content aware rescaling. When I saw the recent developments with the Gimp, mainly being able to better handle higher bit images, I thought I'd give it another whirl on my Ubuntu set up.
