Some time ago i was challenged by Virtual Tune at Gimper to replicate this effect in GIMP. :)
I never did get to it.

This work was actually created by Razor in Cinema 4D i believe. But i thought it may be fun for us to give it a go.
Is anyone up for the challenge? :)

my first impression was, couldnt Rod come up with something easier ? :lol
how about a: give me your best neon challenge ?

but now, that i looked for a bit at the picture, i think it may be not that complicated
in fact, you could do the neon tubes with my banner text tutorial

When VT challenged me to do this i was going through my "GIMP can do or replicate any thing Photo Shop can do" phase. :lol So i am pretty sure the tubes were rendered in Cinema 4D and the rest was finished in Photo Shop CS3.
When you posted your "Neon Esper" topic this challenge came to mind. Looks like you have the technique down pat Esper.
I whole heartily believe this effect can be accomplished with GIMP. :bigthup

Either the author is awfully skilled or the tubes (and their supports) come out of some 3D software.

OTOH they just look like shiny plastic and not like switched on neons.

rod: oh heavens, looks like a real challenge! i think the tubes would be the easy part, it's the details like supports and cables that would cause the trouble.

It clearly can be done but there's work ahead.

that was definitely made 3d and that's how 'switched off' version looks like
