I'm looking for a good screen recording software to record when I'm GIMPing, one that is free, without watermark over the recorded video, good quality and where I can choose from many settings.

I always used Camstudio, it has great quality and the avi file type that Camstudio supports is also usable in Adobe Premiere (which i use for editing).
But sometimes just after I was done with recording it said the file is corrupted and everything that I had recorded so far was lost.
Now I finally know why that happened sometimes, I've read somewhere that Camstudio has a limit of 2GB for every recording session.

So that's when I tried VirtualDub, but for some reason it doesn't support my Nvidia graphics card, all I saw was black when I was done recording.
I read somewhere that I needed to disable OpenGL, and tried that but on the moment I hit the record button it won't stop recording, and I had to use Task Manager to close VirtualDub.
One time I succeeded to stop recording, the recorded video was very smooth and good quality, but it's no use when I'm not able to stop recording :(

Can anyone recommend me a good software for recording?

I like OBS [Open Broadcaster software http://obsproject.com/ ] more than Camstudio.
Change Broadcast settings to File Output Only and will act as ordinary screen recorder.
It has more controls over video codecs, resolution and such. Should work fine with NVIDIA cards.

OBS got over 60 000 downloads just this week. It's well maintained and is in active development.
A month or so ago it was v0.522, 2 days ago new version 0.544 released. It was recommended to me on one of the 3D CG forums
I'm frequent to, and those folks there are always using top notch software.

You could also try Windows Movie Maker. I personally use FastStone Capture. It does cost 20 dollars but it's simple and very easy to use. It will also capture just about anything you want and allow you to draw on the capture.
I believe the 4.0 versions are free but the newer 7.0 versions allow video capture.

It is well worth it to me. :)

Features

A small handy Capture Panel that provides quick access to its capture tools and output options
Global hotkeys to activate screen capturing instantly
Capture windows, objects, menus, full screen, rectangular/freehand regions and scrolling windows/web pages
Capture multiple windows and objects including multi-level menus
Record screen activities including onscreen changes, speech from microphone, mouse movements and clicks into highly compressed video files (Windows Media Video format). A built-in video editor allows you to draw annotations, apply zoom effects and cut unwanted sections
Options to specify output destination (internal editor, clipboard, file, printer ...)
Draw annotation objects such as texts, arrowed lines, highlights, watermarks, rectangles and circles
Apply effects such as drop-shadow, frame, torn-edge and fade-edge
Add image caption
Resize, crop, rotate, sharpen, brighten, adjust colors ...
Undo/Redo
Support external editors
Save in BMP, GIF, JPEG, PCX, PNG, TGA, TIFF and PDF formats
Acquire images from scanner
Convert images to a multi-page PDF file
Join images side by side to produce a single image file
Send captured images by email
Send captured images to Word and PowerPoint documents
Send captured images to a Web (FTP) server
Screen Color Picker
Screen Magnifier
Screen Crosshair
Screen Ruler
Support multiple monitors
Support touch interface (tap, swipe, pinch)
Run when Windows starts (optional)
Minimize to System Tray area
Small footprint in memory
And many more ...

Possible problem here is that you may not have necessary codecs on your system. Or they are somehow corrupt.
I'd start from installing a good codec pack first.

I use aTubeCatcher. It works for what I need it to do. It's free. You can get it here: http://atube-catcher.dsnetwb.com/video/

I'm using an Elgato game capture HD, works best so far since it records the whole display signal. But those cards are not that cheap, but they are worth the money and you can record for hours without worrying about diskspace.

In Linux: recordmydesktop
Or that here: http://www.davidrevoy.com/article65/rec ... untu-12-04

How does it work on PC? I have dual monitor set, will it record signals to both?

@ Baukje One of the features of OBS I didn't mention is that you can capture only a program window. That's what you need, right?
To record your work in GIMP/MyPaint/whatever and make time-lapse video? I use it to capture my workflow in Blender.
While recording I can drag my Blender window across monitors, resize it, etc. The recorder stays focused on that program no matter what.
And the quality of the video capture is way more superior to that of Camstudio. And yeah, you can even live-stream whatever you do.

No wouldn't work, you can only record 1 Signal, you plug in your hdmi cable into the card, and the card forwards the signal and records it.

Maybe the first FAQ helps ?

I have a black screen and can’t see my stream

Firstly, make sure you have created a scene and added a source to actually be seen.
After that, you’ll need to turn on ‘Preview Stream’ or be streaming in order to see your stream

Recordmydesktop works great for me. I don't know if it has anything other than a Linux version, though.

DeviantART Muro has a recording feature, but I could never get the hang of Muro itself. Plus, it seemed choppy when I tried it.

Well, this is the one I use. lol

ffmpeg -f x11grab -xerror -r 15 -s 1280x720 -i :0.0+144,144 -vcodec mpeg4 -b 1000 -qscale 5 -f alsa -i hw:0,1 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 64k -y `date +%s`.avi

The problem with recordmydesktop(-gui) is the ogv format, great quality but horrible to edit.

Front-ends for ffmpeg try

or another

I've been using ScreenFlow for many years without problems. You can have a trail version.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I'll go and look them up when I get home :D WINK and FaststoneCapture weren't really what I was looking for.

K1TesseraEna:
I'd rather want to record my whole desktop, but only a program window will do fine.
