No idea but interestingly this chatacter is called Wally here in the UK.

i found him too, though it took some time. he was 'hugo' in the books i saw as a child, these days i've also seen books where he's called 'valle'. and i've been wondering about wallace too, where is he? and mario bross?

Well I grew up with Wallace and Gromit, along with Chicken Run so I understood the reference in less than 2 seconds.
Not sure how my parents came to the knowledge of it though, since it's made in England...No matter it's brilliant either way.
