I work in a building where I can not always bring in my Retina MacBook Pro, so I'm using the workcenter-supplied Dell Latitude E6400 XFR. I don't like Windows, so I decided to put Linux Mint KDE on it. This is a very stable environment and I really enjoy it. I've used Linux before, primarily Red Hat/Fedora Core, but never really experimented with Gimp. At work, I create a good bit of graphics, with Photoshop, on my rMBP. We have purchased an officially-licensed copy of Photoshop for Windows, but as I stated before, I don't like using Windows, so am looking to Gimp in an effort to re-create what I was able to do with Photoshop. I realize that there are quite a bit of differences (I can't do the nested group/layer thing in Gimp), but I'm willing to roll up my sleeves and see how close I can get to what I was doing before.

I may ask some really "newbie"-esque questions, but I'll get the hang of things as I go on. I've read that this forum is really good, with lots of knowledge being shared - that's what I like and need right now. My goal, eventually, is to get to the point that I can be the one answering questions instead of only asking them.

Nice to meet you iBud. Welcome to Gimp Chat. Gimp can do many things that PS can do and it's largely a case of getting used to a new interface. There are plenty of good third party filters that can be added to make life easier such as liquid rescale (we had content aware scaling before PS!) The tutorials in the tutorial section are well worth doing because they get you used to some of the filters and techniques that will be useful to you. I can recommend for example, Draconian's Metalwurx series for some serious graphics. Just look for the tutorial index then scroll down to Draconian. Hope you find this helpful.

Hello welcom on the forum. I use Photoshop since 11years and Gimp since 3 months. Here the tutos are very good I go read the tutorial on the metal with rivets
