Hi everyone.

For the past few weeks I've been buying up Dells (755 upwards) repopulating the memory to 4 gb, getting operating systems and service packs installed, buying monitors, mice and keyboards like they are going out of fashion. It's been really busy. There are now 8 networked full systems on either vista business or win 7.

I'm going to start up a systems den. Not like anything else I think. This one is going to be free for anyone who cares to drop in and is aimed at anyone who just needs help doing stuff. I've got use of a big old shop, some old tables and chairs and things may improve in time (watch this space)

I haven't got any schedules worked out yet but one of the hours a day will be how to use graphics and hopefully as new people learn they can spare an hour to help someone else. Sort of a pay it forward kind-a-thing.

Needless to say, having spent (for me) a fortune on getting all the kit, the software we are going to be using had to be affordable but good.

GIMP is what I have chosen for graphics. It's going to be a steep learning curve for me and even though I downloaded it first about 3 months back, I still haven't seriously tried it out. This is my project for evenings now for the next couple of weeks and I will be using it and reading my b*tt off in an attempt to keep ahead of any questions which might arise from folk who have dropped in with the intent of improving their computer skills.

I posted a Q in one of the forums about tablets. I can afford a couple I think. Does anyone have a great recommendation for best compatibility with GIMP?

I've used PSP and fireworks for years. All old releases though. I can't post any links for my stuff here yet but hopefully they will be superseded with new GIMP created variety and I really am excited about getting started.

So thank you to all the GIMP creators and improvers for all the hard word put into it so I can get me and others creative on their computers. Having a tool this powerful and free is a fabulous asset and I will be encouraging donations where appropriate :-)

By the way, my name is Hilary and I am in Wales (Pembrokeshire) UK

Will be asking shedloads of Q's without a doubt so thank you in advance for any advice.

Hi Hilary! Wow! That sounds awesome, I'd love to see what the place looks like once it's set up.

Youtube is definitely a big help when learning Gimp. I first learned about Gimp while searching for a way to add lightsabers to pictures and after watching a few tutorials I was hooked. Some good channels to check out are Gimptricks, Gimpknowhow, Myself, Malgalin, and Monsoonami to name a few.

qss: welcome to gimp chat! your idea sounds great, i wish you all the best with your 'system's den'. my best tip to learn gimp is to just sit down and play around with it. there are tutorials and links to tutorials on just about anything you need to know here on gimp chat, though, just check out the tutorial section. the youtube channels david wood listed are really good as well.
at least here on this forum most people seem to use wacom tablets. i have a wacom bamboo pen myself and it plays very nicely with gimp, though it works a lot better with gimp 2.6 than gimp 2.8. i think that depends on how powerful your computer is though.
i'm swedish myself, but both my brother and my boyfriend (who's english) have lived in wales. i hope to go there myself one day too.

Welcome to Gimp Chat Hilary. As AnMal says, I have lived in Wales in Llandudno, volunteering in a christian community. The pastor there was from Pembrokeshire.
