Hi,

I have pictures of flags (just simply colored) and want to give them a "cloth like" look.
What could be the best way to do this?

I already tried with adding a cloth pattern layer, but without any big success.

Regards,
Dietmar

Share your flag image and then folks here can try different things to see if that is what you are looking for Dietmar. :)

Take any simple flag, like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Germany.svg

;-)
Dietmar

PS: I am also open for enhancement like wave effect or whatever makes flags look "nicer"...

Here's a simple canvas texture set to grain merge then blended to taste Dietmar. Did blur the edges before applying texture too. :)

Decided to add a displacement texture to give the flag some variability. :)

Nice work!

What do you mean with "blended to taste"? ;)

And regarding the second result, I am eager to learn what "displacement" texture you used and how you did achieve the variability effect.

Texture used (set to grain merge and also a duplicate set to lighten and reduced opacity to taste):

Displacement texture (just opened one of my textures and blurred it greatly). Used it as a displacement mat (Displacement filter located under Filters>Map):

For wavy effect try Filters>Distorts>Curve bend...
eg.

An example

- Load your flag
Image

- Look for a silk-like cloth texture , by example on google image and load it as a layer set to "Hard Light"
Color -> Desaturate in case you decided to use a colored texture so that "wrinkle" layer will not be using colors
Image

- Control the output given by that layer with Color -> Brightness/Contrast for that wrinkle layer
Image

- In case you have noisy result, just use Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur on your wrinkle layer until you're satisfied
Image

- Still with your wrinkle layer selected -> Select -> Select All (or CTRL+A) , then CTRL+C (or Edit -> Copy) then Edit -> Paste As -> New Image

Image

- Back now to the image you were working on, this time select your flag layer only (not the wrinkle one anymore)

Image

- Now time to displace, click then Filter -> Map -> Displace
Be sure to change the picture used by Pinch and Whirl to the actual wrinkle, by default it may use the flag instead, that's the reason we copy/pasted the wrinkly into a new image or you wouldn't have been able to use that wrinkle as the displace texture
And change the Edge behaviour to Smear for better result

Image

- Press Ok , result :
Image

You can now just fix where it's needed with some brush of the color needed, in my example the black patch in the middle of the red color is fixed by simply brushing that part to red on the now displaced flag layer.
Image

And nothing stop you to edit manually the now displaced flag layer with colored brush to get a better result
Image

Note : use less wrinkled silk texture and you will obtain less dramatic displacement if you wish, or just tone down the Pinch and Whirl values (default 20 , that i used in that example) to lower ones, 10 should be good

Definitely a much better texture Brogun. Didn't displace as far as you did for this result. :)

Still having fun; had to do a lot of tlc around the stars; straight components are easy to do displacement maps; it's the small stuff that's difficult. Lot's of cleaning and I now I missed/messed up a few things. Oh well. Still having fun with displacement maps. :)

OK; had a duh moment. I lessened the displacement effect just for the stars and voila. No additional tricks. Why I didn't think to do this in the first place is beyond me; I'm losing my talent folks. lol

In GIMP, you don't Gina. You use blends along with, in my case, convolution maps. I create them by getting the texture I choose (in my case, the wavy canvas) and dup, run G'MIC's Bilateral filter and set that result to Grain Extract (layer property) and then merge down; this is my convolution map. Set it aside for now. I also take the canvas, blur it (used radius of 16) and used it as the source and ran displacement map on the target (that would be the flag)). After doing that, then I apply the resulting convolution map to my displaced result (set that to Grain Merge) and dup until happy. :)

I tried, but failed...
May you explain this in a bit more in detail for the idiots like me here, as just in compressed 4 lines? ;-)
