You don't have G'MIC for Photoshop, so Gimp wins

I think it depends what version of Both you are using. PS can create a lot more effects, but GIMP has a lot more customization options.

i use to dowload the full version of ps for free (hacking) and i must say it was difficult to use so mpo (my personal opining) i go with gimp bc its easier to use

And I own PS CS4. (This will run on Linux using Crossover, but plug-ins issues remain)

I just keep turning to GIMP, because I like it better.

I haven't worked with PS, but have many years working with gimp. What I have seen done in PS hasn't impressed me. I have seen just about everything done in PS done with gimp. I don't know what the support for PS is like, but gimp support is excellent. Very customizable is gimp and always being improved upon. Can you, in PS, have a script or action or whatever they are called written or modified to suit your need in only a few hours -- sometimes only a few minutes? Gimp is built by its users. How cool is that? Anyhoo, I am a big fan of gimp and let everyone know about it.

And, yeah, g'mic kicks. I love using it.

Yes, actually I'm a big fan of the GimpChat forums, particularly for all your creative experiments. I'm not skilled enough myself to participate but I read you always with great pleasure. There are so many ideas to borrow from there...

But this a GIMP forum so I think the votes might not be completely objective.

If you calculate in the facts that GIMP is open source and free then GIMP wins. Not because it's free or because it has features that Photoshop doesn't have but because it can do enough.

In ease of use, and tailoring the software to suit, GIMP wins, hands down. PS doesn't have that kind of flexibility, and it costs YOU $600.00. Comprende?

Initial processing of RAW files (for my Leica), then I have to give my hat to ACR. Other then that, GIMP wins hands down. Don't want to hear folks tell me how good UFRaw or it's variants are; ACR they are not. Like Jolie said, this is a pretty biased forum, and I'm a GIMPer; trust me. Still, there are a few things lacking in GIMP that needs to be addressed, especially with 16/32 bit processing. I think the potential's there, but potential is not actual. I still vote overall for GIMP and do agree with David (Ronounours).

Griatch, I have to agree with you. I've seen many of the flame-war battles (never participated in any until about.com did a total undeserving smack-down of GIMP via their graphics editor).

It made me think and ask myself why people feel so threatened about individual choices, and why the elitist graphic designers are so anal in nature about their programs of "choice". Perhaps its the volumes of money they spend and it needs justifying? I have no idea.

But lets tend to the "pointless" end of this discussion. I would only say that the only thing pointless is the comparison, on the comparable issues between both programs. You can't say a Camaro outperforms a Corvette. I get that. But the elitists need to call off the hounds when the dudes who have Camaros simply prefer that make over the Corvette. I mean, seriously. Elitists have closed minds, no?

Since I've never used PhotoShop, I really have no way of comparing. Yes, this seems to be a frequent flyer question in GIMP forums.

I'm fairly moderate on these sort of things (comparing two programs or many). They all have their own appeal. And you have to consider many things about each. Some which are obviously advantageous over those which are not advantageous at all. No one wins in these types of comparisons, really.

It's all about individual choice (preference). If you're blooming rich and can afford all the programs, more power to you. It doesn't mean anything else done by a free program is inferior to theirs. I've seen art done on GIMP that resulted better than something similar done on PS. I've even gotten comments on how some PS tutorials turned out better using GIMP than it did with PS. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People tend to forget these things and flame anyway. Someone has to be a winner and the others, losers. Weird world we live in.

I can do in Inkscape what I do in Corel Draw (which I also own) as well as Corel Painter (bloated and laggy) versus the recent testing of Griatch's favorite, MyPaint, which ran very smoothly, including with my Bamboo tablet (the pressure and flow, outstanding!). MyPaint was FREE, Corel Painter cost me $300.00 and had tablet glitches galore. Corel Tech support failed to help me, but Wacom compensated. Yay, Wacom!

For anyone who wants to keep their minds closed, so be it. But I actually suggest you try tech support first, then compare the results of your paid versus free. Then you can really say you've experienced the best and worst of <insert program here>.

Corel, hands down, the worst tech support I have ever encountered. Microsoft, ditto (their recommendations always end with "We recommend you update to...blah blah blah). Adobe is skittish. They have good moments and bad moments. Perhaps its a personnel issue (some love their job vs some who hate their job - depends).

Live a little, love a little, laugh a lot. Why does the world have to be so uptight?

You are supposed to know it, and that is also strictly needed in case you have to collaborate with others collegue ... so if you get lost when opening PS then you also
lost any chances to get the job... !

A graphic designer that don't know how use Illustator and photoshop is just a hopeless case

Anyway once you may proof that you know well how to use, then you have no more any need to do it, if from your experience you think better use a less know (by your ignorant boss ) program because more adapt for that speciphic task nobody will never object
