I'd say don't stop asking because all too often someone else is having the similar problems and the answers you get help them as well.

maybe i am wrong but wasn't your question what is bashcompletion.exe for?
Anyway I would start with David with your questions about GMIC and it's binaries. ;)
I found when i downloaded GMIC I had that binary included. It would load at gimp start and do nothing just freeze.Come to find out it was just something David added to catch bugs or something so it was okay to just delete the binary.I am sure it won't do you any harm for you to delete it also.

I am not sure if this is what you were asking anymore so please do not yell at me if it isn't :lol

I responded to the suggestion that bashcompletion.exe was somehow related to Linux, which is clearly not the case.

Perhaps the author of bashcompletion.exe simply choose a filename containing the term "bash", which is a term associated with Linux and that is where the confusion arises.

The purpose of my posts to this thread is to clarify and hopefully, avoid confusion.

I can understand Gms's frustration that his thread went a little off topic (it happens) and the ultimate purpose of bashcompletion.exe hasn't fully came to light. Rod's suggestion that it is some kind of debugging tool sounds reasonable.

I do not apologize for my opinion regarding the use of Wine or the wisdom of running .exe's in Linux using an emulator. Your opinion may differ. :)

Both bash and bash-completion are genuine Linux programs.
There is a lot of software written for Linux that gets ported to Windows (and Mac).
I am no professor in computer science but it could very well be that a particular piece of software needs bash.
Bash-completion is similar to what you have in editors:you type a few characters and then the editor suggests the rest.
That's all it is capable of.

As far as Wine is concerned:when you run it as user it will have user rights and cannot do any harm.
Lots of members of this forum use wine to run parts of PhotoShop in Linux.
I never play any games but others do.
When you want to play a popular game in Linux you have no choice.
Gerard.

My speculation is that the bashcompletion.exe file is a remnant of the Cygwin development system used to compile the source code on Windows and G'mic (or some other plug-in) is using an invocation of bashcompletion.exe to accomplish wildcard pattern matching of filenames (in manner more flexible than Microsoft's *.* patterns).

To my mind this would not be an optimal approach -- it would be better if the appropriate pattern matching libraries (DLLs) were used directly -- but there is nothing particularly bad about it other than potentially confusing users.

If your concern is that you are somehow upsetting others by asking questions then, speaking for myself, I do not mind at all (I consider that the primary function of forums). If you are merely expressing that asking questions of GNU/Linux users can sometimes result in an overabundance of information, side commentary, and varying opinions then, yes, such is not uncommon and you'll have to decide for yourself whether the benefits are worth the risks. :)

But bashcompletion.exe is not a Linux application. It's a Window's executable.

There is this....
http://win-bash.sourceforge.net/
and this..
http://www.cygwin.com/

It's not Linux though. It's Window's emulating Linux to allow the execution of 'nix style shell scripts.

I'm sure we will get to the bottom of it one day.

In this case get to the bottom may be simple as post a message on the gmic group asking what the heck is "bashcompletation exe"

From my school days i learned only one thing, never be ashame to ask, and skip all intermediary, go to ask directly to who should know better
###########################################################

I still remember when i had a flaming discussion with my teacher about the meaning of a note in our philosophy textbook

he wins the first round, just because he was not only one of the contenders but also the judge,

But i did ask to who know better, i wrote a letter to the Author of the book, and 3 weeks later,he even replied to tell me me that ,yes, my interpretation was correct

And at soon i got the letter that letter i run to the feared big Manager of the school to win the final round

I explain the fact, the letter,i told him i could even accept the teacher ignorance and close the incident without let all the other students know...but the teacher should first change to positive the negative vote he give me, and of course apologize...said that i asked him to call the teacher in the room so we c arrive to a friendly agreement with him as witness

i was only 15 and i could have never do that without asking directly to who know better (in that case the author of the book )...that was the best lesson i had from school

Couldn't have said it better myself, PC. So, like Rod said, we should ask David what the bash file is for, since it came with G'MIC (is this correct?).

Ok, I've posed the question to David on G'MIC Flickr. We'll see what he has to say when he gets around to answering it. :)

I took Rod's suggestion and removed gmic_bashcompletion then tested Gmic and everything seemed to work fine. I still get an error message when gimp starts but it doesn't stay but a second and doesn't seem to affect anything so I'm happy.

Yeah as far as i know it was something that came extra with just that one version of GMIC.
I didn't like the way Gimp was loading and freezing when that binary would execute so i removed it from the plug-ins folder and put it elsewhere for safe keeping.I reloaded Gimp and it ran fine so i just deleted the binary.Haven't had any problems at all since. It seems like this was mentioned before by Lyle?I may be wrong about that though.
1.4.9.1 seems to not have it packaged. :)
Glad it works for you Gms9810.Strange you still get the error though.

That does explain its purpose. He's using it in conjunction with MSYS, which addresses deficiencies in Window's command interpreter.

Quote:
MSYS is a collection of GNU utilities such as bash, make, gawk and grep to allow building of applications and programs which depend on traditionally UNIX tools to be present. It is intended to supplement MinGW and the deficiencies of the cmd shell.

An example would be building a library that uses the autotools build system. Users will typically run "./configure" then "make" to build it. The configure shell script requires a shell script interpreter which is not present on Windows systems, but provided by MSYS.

A common misunderstanding is MSYS is "UNIX on Windows", MSYS by itself does not contain a compiler or a C library, therefore does not give the ability to magically port UNIX programs over to Windows nor does it provide any UNIX specific functionality like case-sensitive filenames. link

Seems my idea that it was ported to Windows was right.

Seems like if it was a binary for Msys maybe it should have been installed into
C:\Msys\1.0\bin ??
Been so long since i used Msys i can not remember where it default installs binaries.
