I use GIMP mostly for web graphics but I like to attempt to repair and enhance old photos too. Sometimes I play around with the scripts for fun.

I think if I had a nice graphics tablet, I could be more creative.

So, what do you use GIMP to do?

Anyone have a recommendation on good graphics tablets?

I use GIMP cuz it has all the features that photoshop has and it is free. I also feel more comfortable using it because of all the super help that is available.
As far as a tablet, I recommend Wacom Bamboo Fun CTE-650 for a reasonably priced one.....

I have Linux and Gimp is available for Linux.

I like to use Gimp to create nice graphics. As a volunteer for the Arts and Entertainment Enhancement organization in my home town, I create posters and flyers for them.

I like the Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet. Fedora has the Wacom drivers.

I use Gimp for making posters and fixing up photos. I got interested in graphix with microsoft's pictureIt, as it was on my computer and I admired other posters I saw online. One youngster, who was in high school, did lots of icons, and told me that she used Gimp. So I googled it, downloaded it, and found the tutorials as a great way to learn how to use it. I would find a cool tutorial, then think of a poster to make using the effects in the tutorial. I had thought of getting photoshop but could never justify the cost just for a hobby. For that much money, I would rather get a macbook, or an iphone 4.

This is a little off topic but on forums I'm usually surrounded by youngsters. Just curious, am I surrounded by them here too? For the record I'm 54.

I use GIMP because it is a nice FREE alternative to Adobe, and runs well with all the other Open Source Image wares such as, InkScape, Scribus, Gnumeric,DeepPaint,Hugin,Kompozer, and Open Office Draw.

i am 47 =)

The reason I started using Gimp was because I saw a video about the new photoshop cs5 'content aware fill' that everyone was raving about and then on youtube one about the Gimp's resynthesize tool that did exactly the same thing which they had devised ages ago.
Gimp being FREE!! and yet still clearly being more forward thinking than adobe just made me want to change. I have not missed photoshop in the slightest. Also articles that I've read about freeware not being as good (you get what you pay for, blah, blah,) make me angry and want to prove them wrong.
I just use Gimp for graphics.
It give me the freedom to use Ubuntu which is a beautiful and clever OS, rather than windows which isn't.

I use GIMP for personal enjoyment, especially animations. I like sharing what I've learned with others. For the record, I'm 43. Molly, 2-ton, and Oregonian are all in their early 20's!

I used to use a programme that came with my first scanner. One day I needed to make an image with transparency in it. But the 10 year old programme couldn't do that. So I googled and found people saying that you could do that in Photoshop. There was someone there that said something along the lines of, "You can do the same things in GIMP as you can do in PS but it's freeware." I googled GIMP, installed it and didn't know where to start. So I kept using the old "scanner programme" for occasional graphics, like making banners for a website and cropping resizing etc. But I slowly learned more about gimp and gave up the old programme.

I use gimp for fun, really, and making icons, banners etc. I like to play with it. When I see a photo I load it in gimp and try to clean it up or give it a nice effect. Or just start up gimp and create something from scratch.

Like Molly, Oregonian and 2-ton, I'm in my early 20s too. :yesnod ;)

Rod and Fencepost are only youngsters . I am over 60 and only just approaching middle age :hehe
Molly, Jolie, O and 2T are only "babes in arms". :)
I got interested in Gimp about 6 years ago when I wanted to restore some photos for the family history.

Wow, such great stories you all have!!

I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to remember the first graphics editing program I ever used and I believe it was a simple paint program on the C64 called doodle. There may have been others. I also remember an app called print shop that did signs, posters and banners using a dot matrix printer. It was very crude but at a distance, the banners looked pretty cool.

Actually, my interest in graphics began when I bought my first computer (VIC-20) in the early 80s. I loved all the games. On the VIC-20, you could create what are called "sprites". They were 16x16 pixel blocks, where each pixel could be one of 16 colors. You could switch back and forth between various blocks to create animations. You could also move the blocks (sprites) around the screen and detect when 2 sprites came in contact with one another. From these basic building blocks, you can see how a game could be easily created. I wrote several, one called ZOM Attack. I wonder if it's still around somewhere these days. I also wrote a little sprite editor in commodore BASIC that allowed me turn off and on, as well as color the pixels in a sprite. I could then change it slightly to create animations for my games. It was very tedious stuff but I loved it. I guess I'm just geeky like that. :cool

Anyway, after playing around with a bunch of mediocre graphics apps, bundled with various scanners, I came across a crippled demo copy of Paint Shop Pro. I thought it was a nice package so I had to have the full version. I had already played around with Photoshop a little but found it bulky, slow and overkill for what I needed. Over time, PSP got better and better until it was upgraded into crappiness, somewhere around version 8 or 9, I believe. That happens to apps all too frequently in my opinion.

By this time, I'd had all I could stomach of MS Windows and moved to Linux. Best move I ever made. I still feel the same way about Photoshop. It's a powerful program but why would I want PS when GIMP does everything I need ..and it's FOSS. :2thup

Thanks for all the trips down memory lane. :jumpclap

Oh yeah, I'm a twenty something too!! Image

Ah vic 20, brings back memories. It had a whopping 3.523 K of RAM, stored programs on a cassette drive and made you want to get a 64 or 128. I was walking in paradise when I got my first C128. I bet you had GEOS at one time too. I also used Paint Shop pro up until v11 then I got fed up with Corel's arrogance and over all bad attitude and I dumped it. Soon after i met Wilber I dumped Corel (also sent them an email telling them I did and why.)and gave my copy of PSP away.

I agree about Paint Shop pro. Jasc's version 7 was the best and the changeover to Corel really wrecked it. Same thing happened to WordPerfect after it was taken over by Corel.

My old "scanner programme" was Micrografx Picture publisher. It is packed with features and I found out much later that it used to be a competitor to Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro back then.. Corel bought it and let it die.

GnuTux and Gms make me feel young. :tyspin My first computer came with windows 98 installed on it.

Corel is bad about that and they don't seem to care. Wordperfect USED to be an excellent word processor. PSP 7 by JASC was great. They have a track record of killing good software. And their customer service is terrible.
