Hey everyone,

We really need to open up a site for scripts and plug-ins, since it seems GIMP.org isn't going to revitalize the old site. I'm willing to host the site on my account, and I will have my attorney draft a clause in my will to set aside funds to keep the site alive for an indefinite amount of time (20 years or so). There is only one setback: someone needs to volunteer to be an co-admin to the site (I probably won't interfere with any of the activity on the site, myself, other then checking out the new stuff) to keep it open and functional. Should GIMP.org decide to re-open the repository, all the scripts and plug-ins could be migrated there. Until that happens, we need a stable site to host them. This internet wide searching for scripts and such is driving me bat-**** crazy. (Excuse my French!)

As for Resynthesizer, once again it's been dropped by the wayside, which is sad to see happening, since Photoshop goes all batty about their Content Aware features, and believe it or not, individuals are actually fronting apps that do some content aware utilities in part, I do not see any new builds of Resynthezier any time soon, nothing against Bootchk or others who have tried to keep it "modern".

I was quite content with what GnuTux had started with scripts, etc., and would like to see something similar to that.

Anyone have anything else to add?

Be great if you could mahvin.
Have you tried wayback machine site for the older scripts & plugins? I just looked and didn't find anything. Have been told by others to try there before, maybe I needed to do something else.
Is up to our coders for the rest.

I can't say I'm very happy with the current situation, but:

- unless the site belongs to an organization, the people managing it will always be the problem. Pixls.us has a nice blog entry on the "bus syndrome". The net is full of zombie gimp-related sites.
- no point in storing code that no-one maintains. Most of the code around Gimp is FOSS, so you can redistribute it, but you either have to convince developers to have you site has their sole repository (what is your feature set? as good as GitHub, GitLab or SourceForge?) or have to maintain the code up-to-date by yourself (some scripts on GimpScripts were seriously back-level)
- as the owner of a reposiroty you have some responsibility in the code put on it. What if someone publishes/updates a script with malicious code in it? Do you have a review process?

AFAIK there is work-in-progress to have an "add-on store" in some future Gimp version. That solution has a much brighter future IMHO.

I think this is a continuation of a discussion here previously. I recommend Gnome GitLab like the Gimp repository.
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp
With some trusted maintainers that don't necessarily need to be coders, scripts and plugins could be kept in one place <possibly> indefinitely.
Also GitHub could be used as a backup repository or mirror.
Issues I can see is that scripts and plugins are sometimes duplicated and don't always work on all Gimp versions or OS combinations.
That needs to be managed by somebody with good communication skills who is a Gimp user.

I agree that there needs to be something of a one-stop shop for scripts, instead of having to search all over the Internet, not knowing which versions are the latest, which scripts work with a given GIMP version, etc. I'm curious as to why there isn't something already set up on an existing repository site. AFAICT, GIMP.org has been down for quite a while.

I just had a major case of deja vu. I remember mentioning this before, and Ofnuts said the same thing the last time. Then I emailed Michael and we basically wrote the repository off, due to Ingo no longer being available due to work constraints (or something else). Ingo did request someone to take over the repository many years ago, and I volunteered to do so, but communications broke down, and later on Michael shared the GIMP devs had basically scrapped it over spammers forcing us to run the gauntlet each and every day. This is what happens when your platform is basically in a blog/forum/share format. It's a tough battle, I admit.

Wishful thinking, guys, is what this is, however, there are some signs of hope with the Add On Store concept that Ofnuts mentioned (I'd like to see that come to fruition, soon). Simpleton scripts is not what my idea of what gets placed in the Add On Store.

The bigger question is "who do you trust"?

In the meantime, be thankful and appreciative to Saulgoode, Ofnuts, Tin, RobA, and many others like - Partha, etc, who go out of their way to compile and create. I'm sure there are others out here in Gimp Chat who have contributed, as well.

I like the idea of an addon store.seems the sanest and safest way to go.

Maybe I'm taking the concept of "Store" too literally,
but if maintenance and reliance on the good-will of a few Ninjas is a problem,
maybe something like the "blendermarket" for Blender Scripts?

(you'll have to Google blender market scripts yourself, as i don't yet have link-posting privilege.

Welcome to Gimp Chat Jack Parker.

Here is a link to Blender Market

They all seem to be priced....something that doesn't really happen in the 'Gimpiverse' :)
