I wonder if that's what the original developers had in mind when they started GIMP? Its development does go pretty far back.

Here's some history: http://www.gimp.org/about/ancient_history.html

I like the second entry, I've always seen Wilber as a handsome sort.

I agree with you, Caz. The definition associated with "jimp" is certainly the best one among all those found so far.

Thank you for providing us with a new point of view about the meaning of "gimp" by means of your old but very accurate dictionary.
As a matter of fact, it is nice to see how this topic is becoming increasingly interesting. :gimp

Okay, so I emailed the creator of Wilber, Tuomas Kuosmanen, about what Wilber really is. My email to him is as follows, copied and pasted:

Tuomas,

Are you the same person that designed Wilber the GIMP? If so, I have a question. Is Wilber supposed to be a known animal, or is he a GIMP, as Gimp[dot]org says? Some say he's a coyote, but I tend to believe what GIMP[dot]org says. Could you please clear this up for us. GIMPWIKI says he's a coyote as well, so some believe that. Also, did Wilber ever have a body, or just a head, as it's known now? Please clear this up for me. Would be great to hear it coming right from the person's mouth that created him. Thanks!

Jim

His response, also copy and pasted:

Hey, yes I am. :-)

You are correct: Wilber is an animal of its own species: a "gimp".
What a GIMP is, is sort of a joke, because people kept asking it so
much: it would be so boring to say it's a dog or a fox or whatever.
And when I designed the character, I did not really have any
particular animal in mind. - so it's sort of a mystery without any
explanation.

It also does not have a body. I think I have seen an image years ago
when someone did a body for it, but not in general.

Have a good day! :-)

So, GIMP[dot]org is correct. :bigthup

Thank you, sir! And I am pleasantly surprised the creator wrote back to you - I can't imagine the volume of emails he must receive given his position ;-)

You have helped answer a curiosity that continues to stoke users, and that too straight from the horse's mouth! Google rightfully drops searchers down your post on this board - 9 years on! Well done friend.

One suggestion: Consider updating GIMP Wikipedia entry with the information you have collected and confirmed. It should rightfully be your honor to add these details.

Rest assured those who think of Wilber as a coyote, will draw them a tail, those who don't, won't.
