This is how it is done

image with 2d text mask:
text layer -> Alpha to Selection
image layer -> Add Layer Masks with Selection

Yes lots of PS videos on Youtube but not very many gimp ones...especially showing that gimp can do as good if not better job.

Here my try with Gimp.
I did my own tutorial with my steps done with Gimp to remember it. :)
I know I did many mistakes. sorry, I'm not a good pupil. :hehe
